Clark,

I double checked these recoils in quickload and at realguns.com

458 win mag, 8.5# rifle, 400 gr bullet, 2429...
59 ft/lbs... and at 8.25, it's 60ft/lb... (i know, that's what my son's 458 weighs)

a 437.5 at 1185, is 18 ft/lb in a 7.5#

the 1100 gr (2.5oz) at 1185 is an UNBELIEVEABLE 98ft/#.. in the 7.5# .. btw, run that into a 14# 577 (that's a practice cast bullet), and it's just 52#... which, in terms of bigbores, is pleasant.

remeber, in their normal weight guns, the 12ga, the 30-06, and the 7mag all kick about the same... about 18-20 ft/lbs.

jeffe,

I recalculated the 3 1/2" mag shotgun, and 63 ft lb is as high as I can go.

1) Assume: gun weighs 7.5 pounds

2) Assume: lead weighs 2.25 oz.

3) Assume: powder weighs 32 grains

4) Assume: lead leaves at 1185 feet / sec

5) Assume: Powder leaves at 1.5 times the speed of the bullet

6) Calculate mass of lead: M= Weight / Gravity = [2.25/16 oz per pound/[32.2 feet / [[sec][sec]]]

=.00437 lb [sec][sec] / feet

7) Calculate mass of powder = 32/223721=.000143 lb [sec][sec] / feet

8) Calculate: momentum of lead = MV = [.00437 lb sec sec / feet][1185feet / sec] = 5.18 lb sec

9) Calculate: momentum of powder = [.000143][1.5][1185]=.254 lb sec

10) Calculate: momentum of gun = MV [bullet] + MV [gun]= 5.18 + .254 = 5.43 lb sec

11) Calculate mass of gun: M= W/G = [7.5 lb] / [32.2 feet / [[sec][sec]]] = .233 lb sec sec / feet

12) Calculate velocity of gun: V = momentum/Mass = [5.43 lb sec]/[.233lb sec sec / feet] = 23.32 feet / sec

13) Calculate energy of gun: E= 1/2 MVV= [.5][.233 lb sec sec /feet][23.31 feet / sec][23.31 feet / sec]= 63.32 foot pounds

But today's problem at the range was a 5 pound 11 ounce rifle shooting 250 gr at 1536 fps with 24 gr of powder.

link to Winchester's picture of the rifle

That hard rubber butt has got to go.

My shoulder was sore after ~60 rounds.

Not too bad, but I am going to up the load next time.
