I would like to open up the neck area of a FL sizing die to make a body size die out of it. It will be quite a bit of increase about .060". The die is very hard and it looks like the neck area would have to be anealled, any suggestions.

Thanks

They can be pretty hard. Sometimes a Carbide boring bar will do it.

What brand of die is it?

I have had good luck with most dies I've tried being machineable, don't be stingy with the oil.

You could also try using a brass rod in a drill press with an abrasive slurry, but I'd just try using a quality drill bit or reamer first.

Sizing dies are case hardened. Removing .060 will remove all carburized material and you will need to re carburize it to use it again.

I'd recommend you get some O-1 steel and thread it and drill and ream it as you like. The O-1 can be hardened with a oxy torch later.

I'm not trying to make a FL sizer of a larger cal. I want to relieve the neck from .22 to .28 to make it into a body size, shoulder bump die only. I already have the proper neck size die. The die is a Hornady.

Thanks

If you have access to a carbide reamer it can be done in a lathe.....you might also return it to Hornady and ask them to do it.

What cartridge is it?

Hornady may be able to do this inexpensively too. If nothing else, it won't cost anything to ask.

I was having a heck of a time drilling holes in a knife blank handle to pin the thing together. Ended up getting a solid carbide bit and it went through like a hot knife thru butter. The knife supply houses have them-but they aren't cheap--
