Yes I do need one. However, I just purchased a jig from Brownell's and my instructor at the local community college is going to let me do it.

Also, GrandView thanks for the picture!

GrandView, thanks for the clear photo, if you have time could you post a photo with the action cocked and the safety on? It would be a large help to me.

Thank you for your time.

Brownells carries the safety, so the question is which gunsmith has the jig and can do an installation in a reasonable time frame for a reasonable cost.

lawndart, yep you can have my "lil knob" as soon as i find out if my 03-a3 will not missfire without it. i would send it to you for just the shipping. i need to find out if i would cause problems first tho. i find the extra length is in the way for my project and it also causes a wobble in the bolt cocking mec.

20 years ago, I cut off the cocking piece on a S/C 1903A3 in an attempt to get faster lock time. I shot that rifle in Cast Bullet Association Modified Military postal matches for several years with light cast bullet loads, and never had a misfire, and that was with the stock spring.

Dang fellas. An '03 Springfield just won't look right without the knob. It's one of the signature marks of the action.

GrandView, thanks for the clear photo that is just what I need. My two springfields have no safety on them and I want to pass them on to my daughter with safeties installed.

P.S. that is a good looking bolt you have also, I have not seen one like that.

Thanks again

Jim or anyone,
The tutorial linked to from Brownell's site is for a M96 (and was not a Wisner) and there is a little half round piece that gets soldered into the front of the shroud to guide the spring loaded bolt locking do-hicky. Does the M98 safety require this part to be soldered into the shroud? I don't think I saw it in the list of included parts for the Wisner safety lever.

A second question if I may...does the lever have detents at each end or is it rely on friction retention?

Here's some pictures of the Springfield 2-pos swing safety.

Since the safety turns on a different axis than the original, the modified bolt lock is a plunger instead of a 3-position turn-lock. The upper part of which is a soldered plug.

Original on left, side swing on right. Safety off......bolt allowed to open.

Safety on......bolt locked. Original has rotated into slot space....modified has plunged into slot space.

Modification to striker. Original on left.

The lever relies on spring pressure to keep it tight and from rattling

Incidentally, I just finished up another batch of the Mauser safeties if anyone is interested.
