I've beat around the bush a few times and "kind of" asked about using Winchester factory short action take off stocks for small ring Mausers and told it was do-able, was wondering if anyone has done the same with large ring 98 Mausers on long action Winchester stocks? Someone tell me if they've done this with either combination of long and short action Winchester stocks and large ring 98(long action) and small ring 96 ( short action) actions and how it turned out. I think I'd like to get short and long action Win. Featherweight (post 64) stocks and restock my 96 and 98 mausers with them. What doyou guys think and what pitfalls should I look out for. These are to be hunting rifles not fine showpeices so no sacrilage of fine Mausers intended.

Hmm a couple years ago I bought a 90% inletted blank that the dealer called a M98 or M70 my choice. I bought it for a M98 and never tried how a M70 would fit. Looking at the "Bolt Action Rifles" book the actions are the same length the 98 ring is larger dia. No clue as to the ring length and I'm too lazy to pull them out and measure. Guard screw spacing is longer on the M98. Curious about the tang area. Keep us posted. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

M1 and Ramrod One of the moderators here told me a year ago that the Win short action and a 96 mauser small ring was an easy re-work to fit, I haven't tried it yet but think I'm about to. It got me to thinking about a large ring 98 and a long action Winchester stock. I'll let you know how this progresses for me.

I have an empty PF winnie stock and a large ring action, I just ran down and checked them. The guard screws don't line up and some other stuff, but it loooooooks like everything could be carved out and the spaces filled in with an ounce or two of filler reinforced acraglass (or other epoxy). Super busy today, but late tonight I'll be able to take some pics to hopefully show you where the differences are. for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside
