I tinker on guns and build them for myself. I was taught many years ago, long before Al Gore invented the internet to use the barrel shank drawings in Bolt Action Rifles by Frank DeHaas.

I always cut the cone breech for m70's(excepting 22 Hornets) @ 41 degrees with .003" - .005" clearance.

I recently met a gunsmith who cuts them from 36 to 38 degrees. He showed me that the angle of pre 64 M70 bolt face lugs varied a bit. He also showed me numerous pre 64 factory take off barrels with a pretty wide spread on angles between 35-38 degrees with very few actually 41 degrees on the breech.

What do most of you guys do, go with the 41 degrees or measure the bolt and customize the fit?

Myself, I do them individually. In fact I do that with them all regardless of make or model.
