I was searching for a 300 H&H CRF rifle and I saw someone had rebarreled a Mark X and is asking $1200 for the rifle. I am not familiar with this action how dose it compare quaility wise with a Win 70 Classic or a Montana 1999? Thanks Brad

The actions compare favorably but you should be able to find a donor action or complete rifle for under $500

That seems high, unless the rifle has been nicely restocked, etc.

Very high unless a great stock.

The MKX is a M98 length action commercial action later the Daly then the Remington 798.

To fit the 300&375H&H the action and box are opened up to the front. Works OK there are 1000s of 375H&Hs out there. A M70 would be easier unless you simply want a M98 based rifle.

Well, I just happen to have one of each of the three.....IMO nothing is as good as a M-70 but must say the M-1999 and MarkX are both worthy of the pricetag. The MarkX does not have the three position safety I like but other than that it's a fine action.

The $1,200 may or may not be a fine price depending on what the rest of the rifle is like.....was a three position safety added?...Does it have a fancy walnut stock?....what barrel was used to rebarrel it?.....are there NECG sights added?....Is the checkering of professional quality?....

The gun is worth anywhere from $400 to $4,000

Here's something to keep in mind.....while you can't get a new Winchester in .300 H&H.....you can get a new Winchester in .300 WSM for about $650.....(Nobody pays retail)

I was just at a local Cabela's yesterday and saw quite a few people paying retail. I doubt if Cabela's and Gander Mountain and some other stores would keep their gun departments open if they didn't do any business.

I would agree that a lot of gun nuts, such as those who hang out around here, find other avenues to purchase their guns. However, oftentimes there are extra costs added in that way, such as FFL fees, shipping fees, handling fees, etc. By the time you get done with some of these transactions you have as much into the thing as if you went down to the local store and bought it.

I have never owned an FFL but have managed to buy new guns at 0.0-10.0% over cost.....and no additional fees at all.....excpept sales tax.....and yes shipping is included as it is with any retail price.

I've never in my life paid more than 10% plus shipping and sales tax.

When I lived in Pine Island Minnesota I was able to buy new guns at cost.....(plus tax) I drove to Gogher shooters supply and picked it out.

A new M-70 has a MSRP of $799....that gun will sell here to anyone that wants one for about $640 out the door.....If you're paying MSRP then you're not doing your shopping.

the gunshop right across the highway from my house....walking distance.

When I lived in Minneapolis I bought guns from Holiday Village.....about the same as I can buy them now.....have you shopped there lately? You won't get bargains like that at Burger Brothers!

When I lived in Shakopee I bought guns for $50 over cost.....that was great if you wanted a Browning O/U it was dealer cost plus shipping and sales tax and hand the guy a fifty in cash....what a deal.

That is a late model. The early had express sights and the release in the bow. Can't tell the scope but for $1200 you can buy an early model Whitworth in 375H&H and just swap the barrel. That one will need work to mag the magazine handle the 300H&H plus you will need the action worked on to handle the longer case. Or for probably $750 or less pick up a Rem 798 or Daly 375 and do the same swap.

$1200 is too much for the rifle pictured above.

I'm sorry I misread your first post. I thought you were going to buy it and convert it to 300H&H.

If you are looking for a 300H&H and this one is already then you couldn't buy a MKX and convert it to 300H&H for much if any less. So $1199 is a good price in my opinion.

I think that it is a stretch to call those rear sights "express" however they could be changed is you didn't like them. I know nothing about "oregunsmithing"

I prefer this deal: a semi-custom 300Wby built on a superior Belgium commercial FN action for $550. Yes, it's a Weatherby, not an H&H, but if you are set on the H&H you can find a low-cost take-off 30-06 or 308 barrel on one of the auction sites, rechamber, rebarrel. You also get a scope.
