I was tightening a muzzle brake that I had just finished on to a Rem 770. Had the reciever in one hand and a aluminum rod 4" long through the holes in the brake tightening it up by hand of course. Well when I slid the bolt into the reciever it would stop at the locking lugs in the receiver & go no further. Hmmm... whats going on here? I asked myself. finally I see that the hole in the barrel attachment (the part that contains the locking lugs) is not lined up with the hole in the receiver for the stock screw. The barrel had turned in the reciever when I tightened up the brake & the bolt lugs were hitting the rear of the receiver lugs after they turned in the receiver! I put a piece of oak in the ejection port & held onto that with one hand & held the barrel tightly with my other hand & turned counter clockwise & the two holes lined up. WHAT THE HELL!! How does remington mate the barrel & receiver in the 770? Not worth a shit what ever method it it!

I wouldn't own one of those things. It's a customers gun.

Clamp the barrel in a vise. It's a 770 so it will probably look at home in a plumbers chain vise. Big Grin

Anyway, clamp it upside down so you can watch the forward hole. By whatever method you see fit, turn the receiver in the direction needed to align both holes. Once both pieces are aligned, you can insert the front action screw to maintain the alignment while you do what you need to.

Next time hold onto the barrel or simply insert the front guard screw to keep them together. That particular rifle is a real piece of shit. I would rather have a Mauser. Big Grin

The muzzle break and installation is probably worth more than the rifle. Talk about throwin' good money after bad...

That's true, but in this day and age when people spend 2 grand for rims for their 1985 Chevy Caprice what do you expect...

I wouldn't doubt if the stock of that 770 hadn;t been bedazzled....

I currently have a 710, the 770's ugly twin, on deck that is chambered for a 270 Win. The guy tells me that his kid (sure) accidentally fired a 308 in it and when he, the kid, went to beat the bolt open, the handle broke off. What a shocker! What a pile of shit!

Well, it shows that you should have clamped the barrel instead of the receiver when you tightened the muzzle brake. That could have happened with any action. The 710-770 series rifles have a pressed-on "receiver" that is nothing more than a scope mount/bolt raceway fixture. The bolt locks into the barrel breech, not the receiver. You need to understand your rifle before you work on it. The 710-770 series is proven to be hunting accurate out-of-box. I am not employed by Remington or receive income from Remington. I am just a gun repairman.

Thanks for sharing that, maybe its their attempt at a quick change takedown rifle. Just pull out the bolt and the barrel falls off.

Westpac,

I'd be curious as to what you're able to do with that 710. I was thinking that when those POS's first hit the market I was reading something, don't recall if it was in one of the gun rags or perhaps even something from Remington about how those things couldn't be rebarreled because of that press fit barrel. My first thought was DISPOSABLE POS!!!! I know my boss had one with a bad barrel sent it back to Remington and they sent a WHOLE NEW RIFLE BACK, which he was at least smart enough to send down the road right away. Anyway I'm curious as to whether there's anything you can do for one of those POS's or if my impression of them is right. That being if they aren't work as designed when they left the factory, you take the plastic off drop it in the trash and the rest in the scrap pile. Can't image a lot that can be serviced on one of those things.
