24 inches is just fine. Most factory guns are cut to 22 inches, some are only 18 inches.

My first two wore 20" barrels and I am still wondering why I upped it to a 24" with this last one. If I was to do it once more I`d do a 22" and tell my smith to ban me from his shop if he say me "thinking" again.
Depending on where and what you hunt any lenght from 18" - 24" is a good choice with a 7-08.

I've owned 3 7mm-08's,the second one had a 26 inch barrel, all the extra 2 inches did was add weight to the rifle which cuts out one of the advantages of a short action cartridge.

In my oppinion any length between 22 & 24 inches is perfect for the 7mm-08

IMO it's still 4" too long!!!

For me, the point of the 7-08 in a hunting rifle is it's a bit more compact than its LA brothers and offers lighter recoil. In a hunting rifle I'd sooner tote a 22" bbl'd 270 than a 24" bbl'd 7-08... sorta seems to defeat the purpose, but that's just an "opinion"... your mileage may vary.

On a 7-08 many would say that 24" is longer than they like it. Personally I think 24" is perfect for the 7-08.

22" or bust for me.

I'm with Brad on this one.....if you're gonna pack a rifle with a 24" barrel or longer, kinda defeats the purpose of having the small cartridge in the short action.

I'd take the 270 too, and not feel bad about it in the least.

All other items aside, the 7mm-08 is about the neatest little cartridge to setup in a short action for good all-around medium to big game rifle. I fell in love with that cartridge a long time ago.

Hey Poulsbo, My 7mm-08 has a 20" barrel and seems to be perfect for my use. Still has plenty of energy to kill inside 400yds. Haven't tried it farther than that because I have other rifles for the longer ranges.

Unlike a lot of larger calibers, the "report" of the 7mm-08 with a 20" barrel is just fine. Most of the larger calibers will require ear protection of some sort while hunting with the short barrels.

I hunt a lot in the rain and prefer to sling my rifle muzzle down under a poncho. With the 20" barrel, there is little concern for the muzzle getting jammed into the ground. Of course I suppose that depends on your height and the terrain you hunt.

Also sling it upside down when climbing trees or into Stands and the 20" length works fine there too.

I don't think you are hurting yourself at all with a 24" barrel though.

My own view is that a short action is a nifty way of getting a longer barrel in the same overall length package....

24" is about perfect for me
