Anyone know/recommend a good book describing the different Mauser actions and possibly basic gunsmithing?
Blew a disc in my back and will be down for awhile, thought I might get alittle reading in.
Thanks

Kuhnhausen's book The Mauser M91 through M98 Bolt Actions A Shop Manual is a place to start. S40

"Mauser M98 & M96" by R. A. Walsh is another. I do believe Midway has both.

GSP7,
I have 2 titanium plates in my neck and 2 titanium rods in my lower back. I have 4 fused in the lower back and I think that much in my neck. The neck was fused because I lost the use of my left arm and my back because of extreme pain and not being able to walk but a short distance. I had no balance. The last surgery of my lower back was 1 year ago. No pain!!! I can't bend very well but I am a new person. I can climb into my deer tower now and walk 5 hours in a gunshow. I hadn't been to a gunshow in 5 years previously. I can't speak for everybody, but no regrets from me.
Sorry to hi jack your thread.

Butch, what did you do to cause such injury to your spine? Work or auto wreck ? Glad its working for you.

ive heard some people love it but know 2 guys that have rods and screws in their backs and one is always in pain and miseable, the other guy can only stand a couple hours at a time.

My brother is the inventory manager for a place that makes all those parts and tools for surgens. He has told me some storys...

for just starting out, I would get the Kunhaussen book already mentioned, "Gunsmithing" by Dunlap, and "Riflesmithing" by Mitchell. These rae all good, basic books and if you read them you will learn the basics and more importantly, know enough to ask specific, intelligent questions. After doing your home work you can get a lot of specific detail right here on AR.

Good luck!

Butch, I have about half of that 308&06 brass you sent me loaded and fired 1x. Right now the Kenai is flooding, the ice dams are tearing the shit out of the banks, docks, walkways etc.
Have a good one!!

Gentlemen thanks for your replies and suggestions on the books, just what I was lokking for.
As far as my back, it started bothering me early November, around Mid-December got to the point walking down a core was really hurting. At 44 and otherwise in great health (I was running 2 to 5 miles a day) until then,I hadn't used a sick day in over 6 years - then bam. Still don't know what I did.
Finally decided to go see the Doc. had MRI done and found I had a herniated disc at L4 L5.
All I can say is this sucks.
Again thanks for the info.
David
