Have a Sako Model 995 with integral tapered dovtails on the receiver. The rear ring needs to be moved toward the muzzle about an inch to allow the scope to be moved forward to provide proper eye relief. Are extended bases and/or rings available and if so from whom? Thanks, Frank.

What type of rings do you have now?

The old Redfield bases for the long action Sako will provide a fairly far-forward rear ring. Another alternative is to use Leupold ring mounts which can be mounted as far forward as the limit of the rear dovetail.

The mounts and bases look like Leupold or Redfield but are not marked. Owner of the rifle had them installed several hundred miles away and doesn't know what brand. Rear ring has windage screws at the front of the rear base but the base only goes forward about halfway on the tapered dovetail.Full forward would yield another half inch; he needs about twice that.Any help appreciated. Frank.

Sounds like these bases are the short action Redfields (or Burris). They fit on the long action, but as you have noted, the rear ring is positioned too far rearward. The long action bases extend somewhat further forward, actually extending out over the loading port by a fraction of an inch, depending on fit of the individual base. If you widen the dovetail in the base slightly with a tri-corner file, they will slide further forward before being stopped by the taper of the receiver's dovetail.

There are also extension rings made for Redfield bases that you can get.

It sounds like you may have one of those variables with an oversized power adjustment ring? I get pretty annoyed at scope manufacturers which reduce the ring mounting area of thier scopes with monsterous adjustment rings on the rear and long, sloping bell housings on the front.
