Could somebody please explain what is required to fit a Win pre 64 mod 70 bolt shroud-3 position safety to a 1903 Springfield bolt. Thanks.

Someone else with more experience than I will chime in but if I understand correctly it can be done but you lose the Springfield cocking piece, due to a diameter issue.

A pre 64 M70 sleeve will not fit an Sprg 1903. The thread timing is off 1/2 a turn of the pre 64 sleeve vs the Sprg 1903. You need to use a post 64 M70 sleeve so the thread timing matches up with the Sprg 1903. Cocking piece diameter is so close to each other no issue there, but the angle required on the side of the cocking piece for the M70 safety lever to engage is a issue due to the position of the Sprg cocking piece in the ready to fire position. Thus the reason for a new headless cocking piece unit to retime the sear face of the new unit. Can supply pics of a post 64 M70 safety on a 1903 with a new headless cocking piece if someone wants to post it here, as I am working on a Sprg action of mine now. Jim might know but I have some Dakota 76? Safeties that might work. They thread in but I haven’t checked the timing. But if you want to try let me know and I’ll sent them for you to try. Don

That might work, would need a headless cocking piece. Can either of you supply the necessary parts. In the meantime ponder this, appears to be a pre war shroud and tilden safety. Looking around it is not pre war, doesn't even look like Winchester. What is this safety.

I have located a left hand post 64 bolt sleeve. could this be made to work. Many different variations out there over the years, anything in particular I need to look for. Don, interested in one of the Dakota 76 if it will work.

When I take my left handed classic Model 70 bolt apart, it has left hand threads. Does this matter? If you intend to fit it to a Springfield, I think it will matter a bit. Jim Kobe 10841 Oxborough Ave So Bloomington MN 55437 952.884.6031 Professional member American Custom Gunmakers Guild

The sleeve in the picture is a 1985 - 1992 vintage M70 RH sleeve unit. After 1992 they changed the lever shape to the dog leg bent one The early post 64 M70 sleeves up til the late 70's had that cap on the back of the sleeve to cover up the rear of the cocking piece. Any Right Hand post 64 sleeve that Winchester/ USRA made in New Haven CT will fit the 1903 Sprg. I have no clue about the thread timing of the newer M70 rifles made in SC, from what I understand they can be indentified by having two cross pins holding the lever in place. And Yes the Left Hand Winchester M70's have Left Hand threads, and NO they will not screw into a Right Hand Bolt. So once you find a sleeve, then the fun starts with a new cocking pice unit. Gary. Sorry but it is not what you think it is. I have 2 of these 1903's I am working on LOW # RIA receivers, that have been annealed. Bolts reworked The cocking cam notch has been welded up, and remachined to a Win M70 cam, a new bolt handle put on, and then reheat treated, a new one piece firing pin unit like a M70 was made to fit the M70 sleeve and bolt body. The 1903 bolt head cut off in the collar groove. A whole new bolt head made for the 22 Hornet caliber like the Win M70 bolt head shape with the pusher. New extractors were made like the Win M70 Hornet but for the shorter 1903 Sprg length. I was lucky enough to have left over Win M70 22 Hornet magazine parts from years ago, and am installing them into the 1903 guards. Once I get them feeding correctly, I will then drill and tap the receivers and finish the pre polish work before I send the receivers out to be reheat treated. I have a low number RIA receiver that is cracked in two places completely though the ring and left side. I took it to work one time, on RIA, and showed it to my boss. He said he thought it was too late to file a claim against the Arsenal. The building where they made them is now the cafeteria.

Lots of questions answered. Since Ed Lapour quit making safeties, looking at plan B. What about the Dakota 76 per Don Markey, will it work.
