Need an oak supplier

I am in need of someone that can supply me a couple of pieces of oak, either red or white altho I would prefer white.
I am building a 1/2 scale Gatling gun and need the wood for the carriage. I have contacted every web site I can find on wood suppliers but no body carries the size I need or don't respond.
I need one piece 3 X 6 X 30 inches long and one piece 2 1/2 inch square at least 20 inches long. I was hoping that someone in the stock making group would know of a mill that would have something like this.
any help in this direction would be apprecated. I can't shoot the gun until I have something to mount it to.

Try posting your question on a woodworking forum like http://forums.taunton.com/fw-knots/

Wood Craft stores often have lumber for sale and or might be able to point you towards a local hardwood supplier.

Note, the lumber you purchase will probably be rough dimensioned and will need to be run through a planer and jointer.

If you have a local cabinet maker I'd probably start there as they may have what you need or they can glue it up and dimension it to your spec. A solid FAS 12/4 x 8" (actual) timber might be hard to come by and pricey.

IMHO, Ash would be more suitable for a gun carriage than red oak (stronger, more shock resistant) and may be cheaper than white oak.

For reference, http://www.downesandreader.com is a supplier I use on occasion.

Good luck,

Jim

I am certain that it would be an easy deal for me to get from my local sawmill, either in Red, White, or Post Oak BUT the shipping is going to be expensive. PM me if you want me to check into after this weekend....I'm pretty sure they'll shut down until next Monday.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

The gun is .22 caliber so altho ash would work I think oak would be a better looking wood.
I will try the sites you provided
Thanks

At this point I can't even consider expense. The gun is mostly brass, with steel barrels and bolts. Brass is priced according to color I think, close to gold.
I apprecate checking for me
Thanks

If your going to dress the wood ( Plane and sand it ) you'll need a Minimum 12/4 or 16/4 Stock .

12/4 = 3" -3.250 Rough 16/4 = 4 -4.250" rough .

I only have dressed 8/4 in Oak both Red & White . I would use White as it's more suitable for that

application . I mostly have Exotics left these days , which are hold overs from 40 years of

of dealing in it . Many of the species are no longer available least wise commercially !.

Most of my stock are in Rough Plank 5/4 8/4 12/4 16/4 & 20/4 4-20" widths X 8-22 Ft. lengths .

You contact one of these folks and they'll help you http://azwoodturners.org/

I work in a sawmill. Things are slow, prices are down and custom cuts are possible. Green is easier kiln dried a possibilty. Shipping will be a bear.

you might get that out of the runner on a pallet- doesn't address the larger piece (unless you glue it up), or matching it.

FWIW I've salvaged smallish pieces of oak, maple, and mahogany from them, even some rosewood, once.

Rolland, if you get really stuck for oak try posting over at graybeardoutdoors.com in the cannon and mortar section. They did a section fairly recently about getting oak in sizes not handled by normal channels. They make cannons and mortars and some of the wood work is something to see. Frank

Thanks for all the help I believe I have finally found a source. Living in a hardwood free zone is somewhat of a handicap at times. At least we don't have snow.
