I have been able to narrow my choices down to a few that I have been able to find for my project 9.3x62.

1.) A BRNO ZKK 600 270 $695

2.) 1950's FN 270 $700

Thoughts please

The other option I have considered is a current CZ550 9.3x62 that is slightly used with a Manlicher stock. The asking price is $1200 and inclides a 1-4 Leupold, QR rings/bases and has a set trigger, 3 position safety, NECG sights and a butterknife (?) bolt. Some of this work has alledgedly been done by Griffen & Howe but their is no documentation to support that

Your not going to take apart a 1949 FN sporter are you?

I suppose that you have a Black and Decker drill to make screw holes thru the crest on the front ring too. Use a center punch first.

From every thing I have read the new CZ actions require enough work that it is not cost effective. I am only considering the above rifles as the stocks can be utilized as I finish my project in stages. I think the CZ550 would be a much better buy than starting with a CZ action.

The "Mausers" come with poor triggers and safeties. However those things can be changed.

I would favor a M70 CFR for an action. The "Classic" era are good actions and make up a fine looking rifle.

That way your not taking apart something really collectable.

By the way you edited out choice #3 which was a 1949 FN. Thanks and good luck with your project.

Actually I edited out the early 1950's FN Sako which was sold this morning. Origionaly I had a typo on the FN. It is a 1950's series with the crest. It would of course stay intact as I would want to see it The one I tried to jump on this AM was a BRNO ZK600 mint for $775 with a set triger. SOLD faster than a speeding mouse

Chuckwagon,

Ya need a 1951 barreled action in 30-06? I have one with a butterknife bolt handle? would make a nice Mannlicher, but not to be confused with Swamp. Who is a Man Licker.

Here's a pic of it. I would part it out for you if you didnt want the complete gun.

Chuck,
I often marvel at how a crest can become such a sacred object and how if you decide to do anything different with the rifle or the action, that you are instantly accused of being a ham fisted back yard gunsmith.

I am building one on a Legacy Mauser 98. Thank god they have no crest. They do have a rather ugly bolt knob but other than that are not bad. Double sq bridge, 3 pos safety and adjustable trigger. It has a half round half octagon barrel on it that I built last year. Howard has claimed it.

Chuck, either action would make a good platform for a custom. If it were me I would go with the FN, I sort of have a soft spot fot them. There would be nothing wrong with the Brno either if that would be your pick. Let us know what you decide.

I saw a Sears M50 at the Newington Gun Exchange in CT yesterday. They were asking about $340 for it. They have an FN Mauser action.

I picked up a FN yesterday at a local dealer with a perfect crest. I sawed up a old POS Savage ( their all junk any how ) and used my dremel motto gizzie on the crest to spell KISS OFF in old english script.
