1894mk2257roberts to 250savage
Whats involved in taking a short action rifle already chambered in 257bob and rechambering to 250savage? How much has to be removed and how practical is it?

Recoil RobI once considered the reverse, Savage to Bob and was told it was simply a matter of cleaning up the chamber. I didn't pursue it but if that was true I imagine the barrel has to be set back to do what you want.
Just checked and the OAL of the Savage is 2.515, the Bob is 2.775 (according to Wikipedia) so you'd have to set back the barrel. Neck and shoulder diameters are smaller also.
Maybe we could just trade guns....

303GuyJust out of interest,
1894mk2, why do you want to go that route? (I happen to think both cartridges are pretty fine but the Roberts can be loaded to 250 velocity and looks a lot like my favourite, the 7x57 - which I do not have).

vapodogbefore starting such a project it might be a good idea to get a few rounds of the cartridge you're interested in and see how they feed....there is considerable greater taper in the Savage round and this just might be cause for feeding issues....and not everyone can address them .....and those that can often are not cheap....
The advice to trade rifles is sound!

iirangerIn a former life I was an English teacher and I must say, your words are SLOPPY...
No you cannot rechamber a .257 Roberts, larger chamber for a 7x57 Mauser case based cartridge, to .250 Savage, a much smaller, shorter anyway, case. i). You can start with a new barrel and chamber .250 Savage. OR ii). MAYBE you can cut off the back end of the barrel you have, rethread, and then re chamber to the much smaller cartridge if you have enough barrel to stand the amputation.
The .257 is based on the 7x57 so the case should be approx. 57 mm long. The .250 Savage is, as I recall, 45 mm long. [Did you notice the new, great target cartridge? The 6.5x47mm Lapua. Compare that to a .250 Savage Improved and see how much is really new... ha, ha.] 57mm - 45mm = 12 mm. 1mm = .004 inch approx. 12 x .004 = .048. About 1/2 inch. Now if you have a "bull" target barrel or a heavy sporter... SHOULD work. If you have some pencil thin, light weight easy to carry sporter barrel... With liability what it is today... I don't think you could get a pro to do it. You do it yourself? Your neck! luck

iirangerAs said, the easiest is to load down the Bob. and 2nd would be the trade rifles thing... But if this barrel shoots, there was a time that the .250 ruled the match range and the 6mm verson, 6mm International, was still chambered in Remington 40X last I looked. Been a while.

Unless you believe in re-incarnation that sentence is also incorrect. 'Sloppy' isn't exactly the Queen's English either, so in the vernacular 'get a life' not just a former one.

Hiker,
The gun I was speaking of is a Rem. Mod.7 I built some years ago. I leave it at a friends in AZ and use when I go out there to hunt javelina. Just kidding about the trade, sorry.

jeffeossoeasist way?
take the load data 5 grains short
OR use factory 257 bob remmy loads, those are pretty anemic

303GuyPerhaps some 'smileys' were omitted by accident.

For what it is worth,
1894mk2, I have no problem with the concept of going from 257 to 250. I'm not able to answer the question you asked but I am interested in the reason for the desire.
I took the case dimensions of the two cartridges and superimposed them. You would have to shorten the breach face by 16mm (.63 inches) at least, to remove the shoulder region of the 257 chamber. Hope that helps.
