Savage 99 stock repair

I passed up a couple of "shooter condition" 99EGs that were otherwise just what I was looking for because the stocks were cracked just behind the tang. I remember Ray saying that is a widespread problem; the 99s I see with better condition stocks are minty guns going for collector'$ price$.

How hard is it to fix? Would it be possible to shoot a couple of the Brownell's repair pins in there, glass bed the tang, and have a solid shooter for the right price?

I think Boyd's has replacement stocks for the mdl 99. I was actually thinking of restocking an old deer getter of mine.

you won't need the pins the glass will hold it, besides there is no place to put the pin where it will do any good on the 99...but the glass is fine.

In other words I should've bought it, cracked stock and all.

Oh, well.

John,
Pull the buttstock and check the trueness of the through bolt. If the guns has been dropped or fallen on by hunter or horse or who knows what??? this can get bent and when the rifle is subsequently fired the stock gets split up badly. Two of those that I have picked up and repaired had bolts that were out of true. Repairs differ as to extent, but as Ray said Acraglass has worked fine for my limited repairs.

I too love those Savage 99's! Jeff Pfeifer
