NaphtaliBarreling a Savage 99?
I have a Savage 99F action (only) that was originally 308 Winchester. To barrel the action with a stainless steel 308 barrel, what am I getting into - in terms of difficulty for the gunsmith, in terms of dollar cost, and anything else that comes to mind? Whom would you recommend to do the job - unless barreling is so straightforward that any competent gunsmith can do the job correctly.

jeffeossopretty easy layout, though i haven't done one .. it screws into the receiver like a regualr gun, with one screw to solder/tig on to hold the forearm

JBrownI believe all 99s except the very late ones have square threads.

BriceI apologize for breaking into this thread, but I have a 99 take down with the old twist, so it won't stabilize anything around 110+ grains. What would it take to rebarrel a take down? I know it would be more work than a standard 99. Any info appreciated.

BriceOops, bad keystroke. I meant "anything around 100 grains"
