Do any of the big manafacturors try and keep the bluing out of the bore of the barrel? I seem to remember hearing that Col Hatcher did some tests in the Springfield Arsenal re this because attempts to stop the bores had led to some injuries from hot salts on people when the stoppers blew out from the pressure. Apparently blued MG barrels lasted slightly longer than unblued... Reason I ask is my 6.5 should soon be reblued (looks like silver now) but I hesitate to do so if it might increase the wear on the barrel. Standard hot tank bluing. Anyone any experience with this?

I was bluing yesterday, the standard hot caustic routine. Nope, bluing does not harm a barrel. And you cannot plug the bore, as some fools recommend, you will have a hot air explosion in the hot caustic tank. Hot caustic salts at 295 degrees F flying around takes off skin and destroys eyeballs. If one does not like bluing in the bore, just make a few passes with JB compound before shooting the rifle. ------------------ My Warden sometimes allows me to respond to email. John- Is absolutely correct. Just thinking about the extent of the reconstructive surgery resulting from a hot caustic Blueing Tank explosion due to someone plugging the bore gives me the creeps. This stuff is bad enough when used properly.-Rob
