I picked out my new project action, she was the nicest on the bunch. Action was real smooth, and glossy. Ok here is the question.

Why is the end of the barrel been back drilled, (bored beyond the rifleings by a long ways) for about 2.5 inches?
At first, I thought I was holding a 9.3, and not a 8mm mauser.

WHAT IS THE DEAL, IS THIS A SPECIAL THING?

SCOUT..

Is it the actual bore or a bayonet adapter?
No matter, you have a great action for your project rifle!!
Good luck!!

I had read that some mausers were field refurbished by armorers back drilling the bores. The back bore was supposed to "protect" the crowns from cleaning rod damage and dings, also it was to clean up rusted muzzles. I dont know if it worked or not. If I can find the link again I will post it. If it shoots, go with it.

The counterboring is usually done to a barrel that has suffered damage to the crown and to the rifling near the muzzle; such damage is usually from improperly cleaning it from the muzzle.

I was hoping, I got a prototype barrel, and it was going to be the magic shooter. Or it was intended to reduce recoil so the follow up shots would be speedy fast.....
So it may seem that poor or no cleaning practices are to blamed.
Thanks guys...
