I just purchased a Model 70, synthetic stock. I had it taken to George Vais for a float and bed job, he refused to do it. He said the forearm is to soft or weak and the bedding material will not adhear very well to the stock. I am thinking of replacing the stock, a stock that will allow the barrel to float, prefer the synthetic, untility gun, not a show piece. Any recomendations?

I am using a new Bell & Carlson to replace the Winchester injection molded stock. Overall I like the stock but it really needs to be pillar bedded. I have the one without the bedding block. After the season I will take it apart and make up some tubes that will be pillars. I may have to glass it it some then also.

I don't want to report something ever as fact when I am not positive but the recoil using this B&C stock is much lighter than similar wood stocked rifles. Overall this stock is worth the $110 or whatever they get for it.

The material that B&C uses is very easy to work with. However it's not impervious to some crushing from the tension of the stock screws. Once the pillars are in there this is going to be just fine. Right now the rifle is a 0.7 MOA gun. Not bad at all for a factory rifle!

McMillan if weight is not so much of an issue (typical stock weight 30-35 oz). McMillan has several nice patterns for the M70 - the copy of the Supergrade stock springs to mind.

For a lighter stock, consider Brown Precision or Mark Bansner (spelling?).

If its a short action, consider the Laminate stock winchester puts on the Model 70 Laminate. Mine is a nice dark laminate and fits me very nicely, I had it pillar bedded no problem. Probably not very expensive from winchester.

RickBin over at 24 hour campfire has a McMillan feather weight pattern for $265. It's for a long action. If I had any use for stock it would already be gone [Wink] LINK FOR WINCHESTER FEATHER WEIGHT MCMILLAN STOCK
