I am making my first stock from a blank and am doing the inletting by hand. My question is how close to the final vertical depth between the bottom of the trigger guard where it will be flush with the stock and the center line of the action do you trim your blank? If, as a large ring M98 Mauser action that dimension were 1.7 inches at the bottom front of the trigger guard to the centerine of the action and 2.25 inches at the bottom back end of the trigger guard to the centerline of the action, how much thicker at those locations would you leave the blank?

Dave...,don't count on all 98's being exactly the same in all diomensions, then throw in aftermarket bottom metal and youll have even more variables.

You'll be safe if you leave about 1/16"
"Whhops room" top and bottom.

Enjoy

Thanks, Duane. That is what I was looking for and sort of what I thought.

When I was in school we added 1/8" to those measurements(measure over the guard screws). Also, leave a gap between the top of the mag box (I use the thickness of my scale) and the bottom of the action to allow for compression. The more ya' do, the less you add to those guard screw measurements,,,,, experience. I find the slot in the little projection where the ejector box mounts is 'center'.
