PyrotekBarrel life of a .223, 22-250, 220Swift.
Hello, everybody.
What's the respective barrel life of above 3 cartridges, assume all are near maximum loads? Thanks in advance.

Bobby TomekMuch will depend on several factors which you have not addressed: how many rounds are put through the tubes in a relatively short time (as in PD shooting), what you consider "accurate" and what type of cleaning procedures you utilize.
The .223 may go 6-8000 rounds before accuracy erodes enough that someone interested only in hunting accuracy will notice. Then again, with the Swift or 22-250, you may begin to notice a difference at 3-4000 rounds -- or perhaps less if you are into extreme precision and can detect differences that are measured in the hundredths to perhaps a tenth (or two) of an inch.
Many factors come into play and need to be addressed to give a more precise anwer.

craigster5000 rds each and see what happens as far as accuracy goes. You might get more, you might get less. Rifle shooting would be much too boring if it was an exact science, wouldn't it?

Major CaliberIt all depends, but I would say the .223 should have at least twice the life of a 22-250.

<Bruce Gordon>Mine is probably an extreme example. I tried a 22-250 barrel with a 1-8 twist for shooting High Power to take advantage of the BC of the 80 grain bullets. Presumably because of the rapid fire strings, the barrel went completely away at about 1400 shots. When I took it back to the gunsmith, he did a chamber cast and found severe throat erosion at least 3" into the rifling. That barrel is trash and the experiment was a failure. The new barrel is in 260 Remington, which should give a barrel life of between 5000 & 10000 rounds.
Gee Bruce, I'm glad you spoke up! I was considering exactly that project for an across-the-course gun. No sense reinventing the wheel. The 260 was next in line in my scheme too.
