I hear alot of people wanting Mauser actions What is wrong with Interarms rifles? Right now I can find 4 on Auction Arms for under $350. That is an Avererage of $280. Plus $45 for shipping and FFL that's $325 for a complete rifle! But you say "I want a custom". Ok Ebay the barrel and stock for a conservative $100 and you have a $225 action that will require loads less metal work than any Milsurp.

What am I missing?

IMO if one wants a mauser action the Interarms actions or the post war FN actions are the way to go.....at least economically.....if one can stomach the name Charles Daly stamped on his action he can use the same action as the interarms.....except imported by a different company. Interarms has a hinged floorplate and the post war FNs don't.....but one can buy a complete .30-06 with a FN action for about $300 or so.....

If you are looking to save money why go the "custom" route in the first place?

Point made and point taken!

But with Milsurp supplies drying up wouldn't this be as good AND cheaper? Why pay more than than you have to?

I have several MKXs and a couple Dalys. Given the option I would go with an early MKX (release in the guard) Second would the late MKX and last Daly. I've had no tgrouble with the Dalys. The two barreled action group MOA. I just don't like the cross pin and the DALY stamped on the side.

If you watch you can get an FN for close to the same money. Check your dealer the Daly dealer price is around $230 and for $30 more you can get the barreled action.

As usual just my $.02

Mark (or anyone else who might know the answer),

Is there a 3-P safety available for the left hand actions? I think Gentry makes one but I take it these are a little out of favour at the moment Big Grin
Any other solution to rid these actions of the slide safety?

I've got a couple of projects in mind, especially for the mini-mauser action, but without being able to get rid of that safety they'll be non-starters.

Jim Kobe does a two position conversion. Do a search as the information has been posted before.

Another option is the Recknagel pieces abailable through New England Custom Guns, its a expensive piece but I haven't heard any complaints. Here is a pic:

Its about $100 more than the Gentry

OOPS, I don't think a left hand is available, but I would check the recknagel catalog, they might have on that isn't listed with NECG.

looks like we cross posted. I have the Recknagel catalogue. No mention in it of a LH safety.

I don't think I've ever seen a left handed safety available for a Mauser. I don't think there enough left handed Mauser out there for anyone to find a safety profitable.

schromf,

Is that a NECG safety? I installed one a few months back and it had a 3rd position locking bar accross the top of the safety lever. I see why the unit costs more, the only question is do I want to spend $250 for a safety?

Mark,

Yes thats a NECG. They are available with and without the locking lever.

Yeah they are $250. But from all the bad stuff I have been hearing about the Gentry safety it seems the difference is mute. The Gentry saves $100.00 but costs more in the end to get them installed properly.

I was just re-reading yours, Jeff's, J Kobe and a few others posts on the Gentry safeties. I will spring for the NECG.

Honestly I am just as happy with a good 2 position safety, the extra position is on one of those nice but not really neccesary features in my book. On or Off with nothing in between suits me just fine.

I have the 3-postiton with locking bar on my 416, mostly because it was on sale at Midway several years ago and a good deal at the time.

It is flawlessly executed but after using it all this time I think it is one safety too many. It takes an unatural movement to roll your thumb up over the lever and push forward at the same time. That doesn't sound like much of a deal but in the heat of the moment it could cost you a relaxed first shot. I wouldn't take it dangerous game hunting unless it were a last resort.

I just bought a Dakota 3 position for my Whitworth. It looks very nice, but I haven't installed it yet. Anyone with experience with these?

I think that most of us smiths have has some experiance with a Dakota 3-position. I think there the nicest unit on the market. Easy to install if you have the correct tools.

I just ended up a very good Interarms day. Changed out the safety to a nice two position, opened the mag up, and replaced the trigger with a Timney. Bonus was I horse traded for semi inletted stock, with nice fiddle and some streaking. I just need a barrel and some ebony to replace the rosewood pieces and this project is definately coming together nicely. Now I just need to decide whether its going to be a 9.3x62 or a 338-06, decisions..decisions.

There isn't a thing wrong with the Interarms Mark X action. Here is a picture of my .375 built on the Mark X. Wouldn't take anything for it.

I suppose if I was building a $5000-$10000 rifle, I wouldn't use a MKX action, but for a hunting rifle, they work well. I have a bunch of FN actioned rifles as well as two Whitworths, a couple of MkX's and a Charles Daly. I'd still rather have a CD than a Remington and I paid $279 for it with a synthetic stock.
