Sirs:
I am having a confusing problem with a Mod.70, 308 Win. Frwt. It has been bedded and floated but has a tendency to throw the 2nd...5th rounds 1/2 in. rt. and then in a decending vertical line. Cold first shot dead on 2in high at 100yd. Have repeated this more than once. 130 gr, 46.5 gr 1mr 4320. Any ideas ??
Thankx

If you have'nt already done it you might try a shim between the barrel and the forearm tip. You only want just enough pressure to dampen vibration of the lightweight barrel. A small piece of target paper will usually work.

Knowing what load you are using doesn't help. Might need a little more info. What does "2nd...5th" mean? Does it mean only the second and fifth rounds move out of the group, or, that the 2nd through the 5th rounds move? Does this happen with a clean bore, or, one that is fouled? Does this happen on a cold barrel or does it matter? And finally, how much does the group move vertically? Thanks...

The second through the fifth shot are the ones moving. I start with a cold barrel first shot dead on and the 2 through 5 move in a decending line. the movement is about 2 inches. The condition of the barrel doesn't appear to make a difference, as it happened with a clean and a fouled barrel.

If your groups moved back and forth then I might think you had a scope or mounting problem, but you say your cold shots are consistent so I doubt it is that, so you might try like Jon suggested and wedge a business card or something between the barrel and forend and see what happens. If the groups are migrating south with the barrel floating, then I'm thinking they will climb with forend pressure. Give it a try and let us know what results you get. Good luck!

Are you reloading ?. If yes I'll assume every thing is correct . OAL cartridge ,neck, bullet weight powder charge Etc. .

First clean your barrel real good , next fire a half a dozen shots in say 5 minutes or so ( Use factory or surplus or what ever loads . Looking to foul the bore is all . Now with a real steady rest shoot two three or more five shot groups .

That doesn't mean in two minutes either !.

Space shots about a minute apart !. Report back to us on group sizes as well as flyer's locations and sequence in individual groups .

This for one gives me a better understanding of what the problem might be . ... salute
