Is there a simple way to fix an ejector on a DR?

Probably not, they are tricky to time properly. They cock when the gun is closed and fire when it is opened.

You might give Mark Beasland of Mark's Born Again Bird Guns a call and tell him what it is doing and see what he recommends. Mark does a lot of the warranty/service work here in the US for Verney-Carron and is very good. If there is a simple fix he will be able to tell you what to do.

I'm real green when it comes to DRs, but I thought the ejector only "cocked" when that particular barrel was fired.

In other words, I was under the impression that you could fire one barrel, open the action and the the fired case would be ejected while the unfired cartridge would not, allowing you to reload the fired barrel only.

Am I all mixed-up?

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I was too simplistic in my description, the ejectors cock on closing and trip on opening but they don't trip unless the barrel has been fired, the locks are cocked on opening.

Take the gun, put two empty cases in it. Fire it.

Put it across your knee (as if spanking a child) and whip its ass!

No, seriously, put it across your knee (as if spanking a child, open the top lever and holding the barrels firm in left hand tap down (with two fingers) on heel of stock.

This will open it very slowly, fraction of an inch, by fraction of an inch.

If they are Southgate ejectors you should be able to hear a "click" as the tumblers trip. Then the next tap should see the gun open a little more and the cases eject.

If you can hear the "click" (which you always should do) but the cases don't eject then the ejector springs are broken.

Not that expensive to make but will need to be fitted and timed. The timing is really only a few strokes with a file BTW!

Or they may be ejectors of the Westley box type. These are more complicated but again it may just be a broken spring.

Can you post a picture of the side of your gun showing the area where the iron of the fore-end meets the knuckle of the action?

Also a picture of the fore-end only, off the gun, looking down on it, a top view. Like a fish laid flat?

That will help those here advise which type of ejectors that you have.

This is my Sabatti 500NE. The left barrel ejector stopped working somewhere around 25 rounds fired. Looks like it will be returned to Cabela's. Damn, I wanted this one to work.
