Small question for those in the know: How much do I need to set the barrel back on a 7/08 in order to rechamber to 7mm Mauser???

I know, I know--why? I suppose because. Never have been able to warm up to the 7/08 for some reason. Too many readings of the 'early' writers, I suppose.

Thanks for the reasoned responses! Arthur Olds

Does the 7mm08 action you're working with have a long enough magazine to accomodate 7x57 loaded to SAAMI/CIP standard length?

I've been thinking of buying a 7/08 barrel and doing the same. They seem to be easier to find than 7x57 barrels.

You had better make sure you have enough barrel to turn and thread a new tenon because you really should set it back the full body length of the 7mm-08, which is 1.6" You can probably get by with a little less, it depends on how loose the 7mm-08 chamber is and how tight the 7mm Mauser chamber will be. I would not try anything less than an inch. Even that is cutting it pretty close.

I have a few double shoulder cartridges in my collection. And a few with 3 and 4 and 5 shoulders. Most are jokes but some of them are for-real cartridges, including one Benchrest cartridge. I don't have a 7-08/7x57 but now I'll have to get one. Roll Eyes

You might try the 7x57 AI reamer before you do anything else - MIGHT make a complete clean chamber depending on the current neck vs the AI reamer.

Just a thought.

EekerThe spirit moves me. I am in the process of removing a new 7-08 barrel from one of the Mod. 200 Steven's and replaceing it with a 7.62 X 41 barrel. After participating on this thread guess what's going to happen to that 7-08 barrel. More toys for old men. fishingroger

Why not just replace the barrel with a 7mm blank rather than mucking about with rechambering, setting back, and the like? In the end, the cost will not be much more and you can upgrade to a premium barrel. If you do it right, you won't even have to contend with wood to metal gaps as you would if you set back the original barrel.

As per usual, the poor guy wanted technical advice on setting a barrel back but got unsolicited recommendations for a new barrel and/or cartridge. Roll Eyes horse

I'll chime in with Ray on wanting a sample (or 2) of the formed case. Call it the 7mm bartsche ?

No he wanted advise on how much to set the barrel back. the answers in a nutshell were, a lot. Thus, my advice to forego the headaches that come with setting a barrel back that far. Often, people will not think about the fact that your barrel will no longer match thr barrel channel. I've seen it happen a lot and once this fact was pointed out the person askling the question no longer wanted to pursue rechambering.

If he plans on restocking it is another matter entirely but that was not stated.

Slam me if you like for offering up sound advice.

Sorry if you took my comment as a slam of you personally. It wasn't meant to be. It was about 50% tongue-in-cheek. Those who know me know that I kid a lot.

Great replies, gentlemen: I did not give you enough information, it seems. 1) The magazine is long enough to accomocate about 3.1, so the 7mm is OK. 2) I have no problem with a new barrel, if that is what it takes, just seems a shame to waste the one that is on it (although I could try to sell the 7/08 for a few $$. 3) Restocking is in the future, so that also is not a real problem.

I assume that unless you have done it, it really depends on the individual chamber, or so that is the general jist of the replies, and there is not enough barrel shank for 1".

Thus, it would seem, leave it 7/08 or new barrel and hope the shape comes out a close match, for now at least.

Other ideas and suggestions are, of course, welcome!!!

Thanks, Arthur Olds

Another option sice you seem to have Magazine length is to get the throat increased to more adequately handle longer bullets. That is, of course, if your twist permitts it. But than it must or you wouldn't be quiring about the 7x57. fishingroger

I've had similar issues with calibres I didn't warm to.

Without exception I warmed to them when I shot them and found them accurate and capable.

Have you shot it? As a stop gap you could have the throat reamed to allow the seating of 140gr+ bullets to the base of the neck.
