FOR a .300H&H M70 type blue/walnut, which action would you choose these days:

1./ Original pre64?
2./ New Hein action, if so which length,Std 06 modified, or full .375 Length?

I sort of like the orig pre64 length, maybe only cause I am used to seeing them.Maybe the longer vesion makes more sense?

how much metal is removed from a pre64 to fit the .300H&H? and where is it removed from?

Bolt handle: Straight or Original, Other?

I suggest finding a model 70 classic in 7mm STW or 300 Weatherby and having it rebarreled. No sweat.

Technically I'd have to say the Hein or the newer classic M70. But the pre-64 may very well be the classic action for the .300 and .375 H&H. I haven't examined a Hein but they do appear to be well made and finished actions. Plus I think that they are furnished with Blackburn bottom metal(?). I'm not sure about their magazine boxes. Their N3 magnum action should be perfect for a .300 H&H. Or maybe their slightly longer N4. I am a fan of both the pre-64 and modern classic M70's. Though the .300 H&H would fit better in the classic as it is about 0.25" longer than the pre-64.

The original H&H pre-64's were lengthened to the front by machining extra clearance at the feed ramp which is the back of the lower lug recess. A good smith will open a non H&H pre-64 at the rear of the action to avoid the former. Depending on what you want to spend I would go with the Hein ordered in .300 H&H or a pre-64 or classic M70 originally in .30-06, .270...etc. The std. length to allow your smith as much metal to work with so the rifle will function properly.

David,
Yes that helps, it confirms what I thought, that the new70 is longer(.25"/6.35mm) than the pre64. I believe that the hein is also longer than the pre64, they state a 3.4"magbox( I will confirm.)
One option I am entertaining the idea of, is a Hein done with integral bridges to accept conetrol low rings for a 2.5-8x Leupold. I would like the rings positioned to match the exact length of the scope and still look good on the action. So i must figure which action would be more suitable,N3/N3mag I dont want to chop into the feed ramp to any great degree,if at all,or have the bolt draw to far back. That N3Mag may be the ticket, Will just take some home work.
As starters,Here is very general example to start the visualisation process off. Just imagine the rings lower, bases as integral and the same length as the ring(15mm).

If you look at this SAKO 9.3x64-Leupold 2.5-8x below, that is how I would like the conetrol rings placed:

I suppose i could simplify things by going .308Nmag,but while I would have that,I would at the same time, be but dreaming of the woman(300H&H) that would truelly make me happy.

FWIW thare's noting wrong with the M-70 push feed actions either.....I wouldn't hesitate to build a .300 H&H on a pushfeed since it's not a DG rifle. I've owned a few and have no complaints at all.
