I've been talking to Mark Penrod about building me a 9.3x62 on either a pre-64 or a blued classic action. Anyone know what I can expect to pay for either? Thanks, Andy

Well, there's a pre-64 70 in .30-06 for $845 in the AR classifieds now (which I have zero knowledge of seller or rifle BTW), sell the stock and barrel and you'd be in the action for about $600 or so, which is about as cheap as you're going to find one for in my experience lately. You might get a blued classic for less with some shopping around. I guess you can ask Mark Penrod for his costs from there. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere. NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR. I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

Gato nailed it. most times you are better off striping a complete (or mostly complete) rifke for the action. I would guess with a little shopping around you can pick up a not so nice rifle for around 600 +/-. This is not mine, but what I would look for if I needed another. model 70 on GB Pre 64 here: pre 64 on gb good luck

I thought the 9.3 x 62 on a M70 was taboo?

Post WWII pre 64 M70 30-06 in very good condition move at the gun shows at $600 and stay there all day at $800. For an original magnum, you could spend thousands.

If you keep an eye on gunsamerica and gunbroker you should be able to pick up donor rifle with a blued classic action for $500 or less. Unless you're just hung up on nostalgia use one of the newer classic actions, they have quite a few improvements over the pre-64's and Penrod will straighten out any imperfections in them. I really can't think of one good reason to pick a pre-64 over a newer classic for a custom. BTW, I have two rifles built by Mark, he's excellent.

Mark told me the same thing regarding the classics versus the pre-64, he likes the classic action better. Thanks, guys for all the input. I think I'll keep my eye out for a blued classic in .270 or 30-06 to use as a donor.

I have a MOdel 70 Classic in .270 that has the Boss on it. The gun is in like new condition. I am looking for $675 shipped on it. You can probably find used ones cheaper, but probably not in this condition.

Stu, If I was left handed I would own that leftie 500 Jefferies that was built on a Weatherby MKV with that ugly red synthetic stock. At least you changed that ugly m70 bolt. If I was going to use a m70, I would rework it to make it mauser-esque like you did. Looks like a wonderful rifle.

My dad has a near-mint 1950 M70 in .30-06 Springsteen. I get it when he passes on and no one gets it after that-- not even you, Obama...

Leftys do this out of necessity not ignorance, therefore they should be given a free pass. Jason Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown
