Well... I guess you can't argue with the guy, that IS a "sheep rifle"

I was pondering the stuff you read in ads on gunbroker. "This rifle was built by world renown master rifle builder Guy Callhoon." Then you look at the seller's email: gcallhoon@redneck.net
Roll Eyes

This listing did have some good ones: had cut checkering! Not Machined! 18 lines per inch.

Barrel made of very hard steel which explains the purple "bluing."

Wow

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

I'm glad to see that the craft, the skill, of fine bespoke custom rifle making is still being practised in America. The legacy of Niedner, Ackley and Newton lives on it seems.

i thought the 3 pins being hidden like an acorn cluster was dang clever... and the sheep.. well, i can't carve my initials in a table, so, in an odd way, i think the guy meant it to be a tribute... if the pharoahs had custom rifles 4000 years ago, i would bet each one would be carved with an animal head as a totem.

i guess i gave the guy a little more artistic license than usual.. but it is christmas

Commercial Mausers trade starting at ~ $375 at the Puyallup gun show.

That one might get $475 with a fancy stock like that, but not a $900 sell price.

You might see it at $900 ask price, but you can see used guns with twice the ask price of retail price for a new gun.

With a little more work, a good stock carver could make that into a beautiful, not to say sexy, sheep rifle.

It only took a few minutes to do this rendering.

Now boys, control yourselves:

I have a few J.C. Higgins M50s hanging out in my gun safe and it looks to me like all he did was butcher up a factory stock to try and make it look better. He failed. badly I might add.

I'd give him $900 for it....providing there were eight $100 bills lining the barrel channel. (better make that nine)

Reminds me of the personal 'truck gun' a guy tried to sell me recently. Too bad he didn't let it ride up front in the cab with him.

Bet it was only shot once! Appears to have been a direct hit with a 12 gauge.

Yup, that's Jack's personal sheep rifle. And I'm wearing a bow-tie a foot wide too!

MR, very cute. I think that high altitude sheep should not smoke though.

I do think someone missed the chance to shape the grip into a scrotum with a ball on each side. "Go ahead and shot the rifle. No way I am not grabbing that thing." It would understandably end up with little use.

Was there any kind of explanation for the divot on top of the comb? I don't particularly want to go back and look. Also wonder why there is no compass.

I think that had to do with the sheep's nose rising up out of the comb. You really owe it to yourself to go back and look.

Did anyone notice that the rear sight has it's dovetail located smack dab in the middle of the barrel's chamber? One of my Higgins 50's had that feature. It too was a .270 that has since been rebarreled to 7x57 and restocked in the European style.
Seems to me that putting a deep dovetail right over the chamber where pressure would be the highest is to me a very dumb idea. Guess none of the Higgins set up that way ever blew up but I sure wasn't comfortable with that set up. You can't blame FN for the screw-up as it was High Standard that did the barrels.
