Paperpunching/Target Mauser Project Advice

Hello to all,

I´m willing to get some advices on a mauser project I´m trying to acomplish.

Bascially, a target mauser heavy rifle, for paperpunching, based on a surplus Steyr 1912, with a heavy bull barrel, aprox. 0.9" at the muzzle, timney trigger and wood stock, made from dark "imbuia"(Ocotea porosa ), with adjustable cheek-piece.

Caliber will be .308, 22" barrel, 1-12" twist, to use primarely SMK 168´s, for shots not so far beyond 300yds. There a small chance of building it a 7-08.

Everything is already bought, except for the barrel, as I am waiting to send all the parts to the gunsmith, for trueing the action, change the bolt handle(the original one is straight), glass-bed the stock, install trigger and barrel, drill an tape for scope mount, and do the finish on metal parts. I´ll do the finish on the stock.

Before the questions, some info:

- I cannot import anything, so, I´ll use what I already have. The barrel is from a local gunsmith, capable of much less than 1 moa. With the correct ammo, those barrel are very very accurate.

- I will chosse the scope later, I have available a Nikon Monarch and Leupold (more than one model).

Finally, my questions :

1 - What do you guys would choose for a new bolt handle design? If possible, pics or drawings.

2 - Mounts and rings have to be weaver style, they are easier to find here. But shall I use one-piece or two-piece mount ? Why ?

3 - What finish do you guys would do for the wood stock? The wood "imbuia", it is a high grain wood, and my choice is the darker one. Here´s a picture of the regular imbuia (the stock will be just like it, but just imagine a little darker):

(Horrible muzzle break! Big Grin)

4 - What would you do with the metal parts finish ? Why ? And, if possible, pictures !

Of course, if you Mrs. have some other advice (barrel lenght, twist, stock, trigger, etc), it would be very helpfull. It is my first target mauser project, and I hope it turn to be , at least, accurate !

Regards,

Reiter.

1 - I like the straight down style like the one in the picture. I'd do something similar.

2 - I've used 2 piece and 1 piece bases on past projects, both have worked fine. I prefer the look of the 2 piece bases. If available I'd use Burris Signature Zee rings made for the Weaver base. They are the ones with the nylon inserts.

3 - Pro Custom Oil or Tru Oil for the stock. I've used both but prefer the Pro Custom.

4 - As far as metal finishing, it's pretty hard to beat a nice slow rust blue.
