I have a chance to buy a custom Remington 788 at a price that I believe is very very good. Only problem is that it is chambered in 22/250 and I have no practical use for this cartride. How hard would it be to convert this rifle to .308 Win and how much would I be looking at spending. Or should I buy the rifle and try to trade into a .308. Thanks, Matt

How much for the 788 in 22-250? How much for a 308? Enough differece to pay for a rebarrel? Is the 788 cheap enough to trade for another firearm in 308 even or to your advantage? May or may not be some feeding issues if you buy it and just rebarrel it. All the questions, and you have most of the answers for your situation. Bobby Tomek had a 308 listed in Forum Classified section, it may still be available. LouisB

What do you mean by "custom"? A 788 in 308 should be fairly easy to come by. In my neck of the woods, they will usually go for $300-350 (CDN, about $200-250 US) depending on condition. I'm not trying to belittle 788's, I have four of them, and they are great little rifles. But economically speaking, inexpensive ones are fairly common. Unless this rifle had some features you are enamoured of, it is much easier (and cheaper) to buy in 308 then to convert to 308. FWIW - Dan [ 09-22-2003, 18:00: Message edited by: dan belisle ]

Pass on it and find one in .308. No matter what kind of deal you get it will probably be more expensive to re-barrel, re-finish and find a new magazine.

The 22-250 is the Medium length action while the 308 is the Long action. You can not convert the 22-250 to a 308 in the Remington 788 model. You have to stay with a 22-250 length caliber that will function thru that magazine. Jim Wisner
