Sometimes I take on a project where I am trying to clean up a neglected firearm or even worse a neglected muzzleloader. I like to soak the bores in something that will help loosen any corrosion and prevent further corrosion until I find the time to actually get time to do the elbow grease part. The problem is RemOil, Kroil, BreakFree and all the other commercial CLP type products are too expensive for barrel and parts soaking as I need so much. I am looking for a cheaper alternative. Maybe something like tranny fluid or something common and inexpensive. Any good ideas?

OK my 2 cents worth here.. One thing to be cautious of, is that rust and blue are basically the same oxide so one has to be careful that something left on long-term won't affect the bluing as well. You should google up "Ed's Red", if you want something to soak guns in. Personally I like a mixture of ATF and mineral spirits. I usually mix it by eye, about 5 parts ATF to 1 part spirits. Try that, and if it is too thick for your tastes add more spirits and if too runny pour in more ATF. for every hour in front of the computer you should have 3 hours outside

Marvel Mystery Oil. Avaliable at any NAPA. It is simply a light oil and detergent. Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship Phil Shoemaker Alaska Master guide FAA Master pilot NRA Benefactor www.grizzlyskinsofalaska.com

Amen to the “Ed’s Red†formula and also to Marvels Mystery Oil. I make up my own version of Ed’s Red bore cleaner and often use Mystery Oil in the formula. I’ve also been cleaning guns, and anything else made of steel, with ATF for years and it works as good as any other product out there.

Good old JP5, diesel fuel or kerosene. Any more the "fuels" are nearly more expensive than the actual Penetrating Oils. Liquid Wrench and Kroil will do the job too.

Oh how I wish I could just use Kroil. I do use it but it just ain't cost effective. I did go buy some Marvel Mystery Oil. A local friend recommended that also. That stuff is up to $3/quart but is still cheaper than the commercial gun juices. I will probbaly mix some Ed's Red eventually. I do appreciate all the comments.
