Sporterizing a '96 Swede

Brand new to this forum and would ask for some assistance. It appears that there are a few Swede fans in the bunch and I'd like to know your ideas for taking a stock 96(1909 Carl Gustav) and turning it into a liteweight deer rifle. It's a gift for a brother that has done me great service in the past few years. I'm thinking something in the 22" range with a simple 4X scope will suit his needs. I'd like to keep the factory wood and clean it up nice, but am not opposed to swapping it for something else.
Thanks much
Ashbless

I think it would be a grand idea. I have always wanted a sporterized Gustav. Personally I would go with a custom walnut stock, with enough hight to see through the scope properly. Maybe a 2-7 variable compact scope in low rings. Of course the bolt handle needs reshaping, and an aftermarket safety. Now that would be one classy deer gun!

How much of this work do you want to do yourself, and how much money do you want to spend total, and how much do you spend on a scope? You might want to post this then there will be an idea, otherwise you'll end up with a $1500 Gustav knowing the guys around here!

Oh, welcome to the forums! I do have to say this is absolutely the best place on the net to gain knowledge!

Okay- here goes a wish list. The bolt has to be turned down. The barrel cut and crowned. I'm thinking of a replacement trigger/safety. It would need to be drilled and tapped for scope mounts. I'd like a good quality no frills fixed power. I could manage refinishing the stock and glassbedding it(about all my talent enables me to do). I'd like to keep all the mods from totalling more than $500.
How does that sound?

For less than $500, you should be able to get a Kimber-modified Swede that has all that work already done to it -- plus a scope.

The Swede 96 is a "used" rifle anyway, so looking for a used Kimber-Swede gets you all the results you're after -- faster (once you find one) -- and possibly even cheaper.

Plus... It preserves yet another Model 96 in its original military configuration. Many Swede collectors & fans would put a premium on that and thank you for doing so.

Good luck! Old No7

A quick follow=up...

Go to auctionarms.com and do a search for "Swedish" in "title & description" and look at Item # 1614901. It's described as:

"SWEDISH -- M-96 Swedish Sporter 6.5X55 W/Bushnell Scope. Time Left till Auction Closes -- 6 Days, 20 Hours, 46 Minutes
Category: Rifles -- Item# 1614901"

Looks like a Kimber-modified Swede to me. If you bid, you'll probably need to use an FFL dealer in your area. I've had excellent results on the many deals arranged from that site.

(Not the seller or affiliated with auctionarms; just interested in Swede's, that's all.)

Another option would be to by a commercial rifle in this caliber, both Ruger and winchester list it, altho they can be harder to find in this caliber. Maybe the best buy is the CZ 550, Turkish walnut stock, single set trigger, and rings included. They are listed on gunbroker.com @ $419. A commercial rifle would at least be the "easy" way.
Best
