I recently was given a m1917 winchester rifle action that some moron drilled for a scope but the holes were too big, off center, and crooked. I am sure a lot of you have seen one of these before. He also milled off the rear sight ears. Well I repaired the holes by filling with my mig and filing the welds down then polishing it all out. No I didn't get it too hot. I kept my pinky finger in contact with the upper locking lug inside the receiver the whole time I was welding and it never got hot. I also rechecked the hardness and it didn't change anything. My delima is I am not much of a metal carver and stamps won't cut it but I need to fix the I, C, and T in the winchester name on it. Any ideas how to do it or should I just correctly drill and tap it for a scope base and cover it. If so wich one will fit in your experience? I am pretty sure a rem model 30 was the same thing but There aren't many listed in the catalogs I have. I saw a side mount weaver base in brownells but I don't care for them much and would prefer a top mount anyway. Need ideas to get this one going. Please offer any ideas you all might have.
Oh I got a brand new still in the original wrap JA 2 groove barrel for it on ebay last week. Talk about lucky! I love the way they shoot cast bullets. That is what I plan to shoot through it mostly. A 165 rcbs sil bullet that I also use in my m14.

Weaver makes bases for the M17 Enfield that has had the receiver bridge modified.

M14 I found that a Rem long will fit a M14 action. The mount has a single hole a the back of the part of receiver. You can use the single hole for the sight, this hole is a 6-40. Line the back of the mount up with the hole and mark the front. Set up the dril guide (one of the ones from Midway they cost like $4o)The only other thing is to shape the back of the action to fit the radius of the mount and file it to the right height to make it level with the action. (measure from the bottom of the action to the bottom of the mount as you file and keep it flat and level) I hope this helps.

It's also common to grind the receiver down and drill it to emulate the Winchester Model 70. I have a number of them that use Model 70 bases, be it Weaver or Leupold.

I suggest that you don't shoot that gun if you migged the front screw holes, for one thing you did not mig it right if you could touch the inside of the ring and the other is I would never shoot a gun that had heat on the front ring under any circumstances...

I don't want to rain on your parade but I don't want to hear about you eating a bunch of steel...That said its up to you....unless you have the action de-tempered and brought back up to specs...Cost about $50,00
