There is a Robert Winter of some reknown. He was born in 1933, received some of his training under Jerry Fisher, and became a full-time gunsmith/stockmaker in 1964.

His work was popular in the custom guns section of Gun Digest, and was featured in Ron Toews' "Contemporary American Stockmakers".....if you have access to a copy of that book.

Winter's trademark design was severely classic, and he seldom made stocks with cheekpieces. If your rifle is his work, it would likely be very nice.

At the time of publication of Toews' book, Winter lived in Menno, South Dakota.

I recently purchased a custom LH 416 on a Dakota action.

I confirmed from Dakota the Action was made 5/90.

The markings on the Barrel read:

12
90

DGLS
XX
RW

The Butt of the stock says: "R Winter"

I'm curious if anyone knows(knew) who this was, the quality of the gun is superb. The widow of the man who had it built told me her husband went to North or South Dakota to have the wood picked out, I'm not sure if R Winter was based there.

Appreciate any insight

Jim

Thanks Grandview, I was able to find his phone number in Gun Digest. I spoke with him this am and he did build the gun. He took the time to answer all my questions, a very nice fellow.

Thanks

Jim
