Just finished bedding the action of my CZ 527 American. Turned out fine other than when I took the masking tape off, it took off a fair bit of the varnish (if that's what it is). It has a matte finish and I noticed on the first dent the stock got that the finish turned milky and a light rub flaked it off. Not a very durable finish. I would like to get the rest of it off and redo with a hand rubbed oil type finish. What is the best way to get the original finish off and re finish? Any suggestions on products and techniques are appreciated. Ian

I read to use masking tape to keep any overflow of bedding onto the stock. Seems now to have done more harm than good. Much like barrel break-in, everyone you ask seems to have a different method/opinion. Thanks, I'll do a search. Ian

Ian I use masking tape for the same purpose, I wonder what others do? Here are some links the first from thread on HA. http://www.huntamerica.com/wwwthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB8&Number=233468&Forum=UBB8&Words=benmatte&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=233330&Sear ch=true#Post233468 Heres another... http://riflestocks.tripod.com/ For finishes I like a product caled pro-custom oil made be chempak, you can find it at brownells along with a bunch of other finishing oils here brownells web site http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/Home/default.aspx You can also just use a marine spar varnish, alone, ot top it with a tungoil product like benmatte which is made by Dalys. I buy it at the local paint store. dempsey

I quess I never considered the wax. I usually take a piece of tape and tape it to my forehead, peel it off and the oils in the skin makes the tape less tacky. And yes, I make sure I'm alone when doing this.
