Two friends and I are planning a varmit hunt for next year. I am trying to decide between trading in my model 10 in .223 for a model 12 in the same caliber.

My old model 10 is a fine shooter, but the barrel heats up enough that after seven or so shots (at max) the barrel has to cool down for a while.

I was wonder if it would be possible to put a varmit profile barrel on a Savage action that was not originally made for a varmit barrel. Are the threads different? I realize that a new stock would have to be used, but that isn't a problem.

Jack, you can order ready to go barrels from both Sharp Shooter Supply (Douglas Barrels) or heavier Shilen barrels from Brownell's.

SmilerDoes anyone make or use segmented aluminum barrel heat sinks? I've machined multiple grooves into a barrel or two of mine to increase the heat exchange surface area but the idea of having those grooves on a number of pieces of aluninmum attached to the barrel would greatly increase the heat exchange rather than having a bigger diameter barrel. If the product exists it gives you another option. If it doesn't exist and you're a handy guy make some. If you want I can help you perhaps with the design. wave you've got a year to play and if that barrel of yours shoots it sure is worth a try.

I don,t know what velocity you think you might need but when I use Blue Dot in any of my rifles they shoot cool but you will sacrafice some speed. About the blue Dot Seafire is an avid varmint guy and he uses a lot of Blue Dot. Drop him a PM. He really is a cranky old fart and you may have to charm him a little. roflmaoroger

If the targets are prairie dogs I recommend two guns.....shoot one till it's hot and then shoot the other and then switch back again.

I've even poured cold water down barrels while shooting dogs to cool the barrels. It's one great sport if you can find a big town.

On of the guys that is going on the trip works as a drafting engineer at a place that makes firetrucks. He has helped me machine parts before (and one attempt at making an aluminum 10/22 stock), so I will talk to him!
Vapodog,
I have two guns that will be on the trip. One a Rock River varmit AR, the other is the Savage. So the Savage is a "back up gun" for me and the guy that only has a .25-06.

My buddy isn't sure about the aluminum inlets, worried about the barrel strength. We will keep plugging away.

The idea isn't to remove any steel, but to put the heatsinks onto the the untouched barrel and remove a lot of the wood to facilitate the segmented heat sinks. The wood only traps the heat anyway. Replaced with finned aluminum segments around the barrel and vent holes through thr bottom of the forearm would give you a lot of heat disapation. Just one of those fun after hours projects that might yield a very adequate piece of hardware for you. beerroger
