Howdy,
the 550 express is a 2.65" case straight walled 460 weatherby... it should throw a 650 or 700 about 2150....

this is an idea that neal and I came up with, after he invented the 550 magnum, which is a 3" case... my thought was to "match" the 577 nitro, and fit in a mauser. it is the most powerful round that you could reasonabley fit in a 98, period.

the steyr feeds like greased minnows, btw, in a 98

Ok, I just cleaned out my work area and I sitting here with 2 1909s an unknown 98 and a Mark X. All have standard bolt faces (but could be opened) 2 have been left at 7x57 length in the magazine and 2 are 06. So the question is what to start for my winter project. I'm open for suggestions. My current calibers are.

22-250, 243, (2)25-06, 257 Roberts, 6.5-06, 280IMP wildcat
The improved 280 necked up to 300, 340, 375
7STW, 338Wmag, 358 Norma Mag, 416 Taylor

Suggestions??????

375 Taylor in one of the 06 length actions.

A classic 7x57 in one of the 1909s, as in one of the classic European mannlichers with half round/half octagan barrel

338-06?

Why? I don't know. I like it, it's a straight-forward job on the -06 actions, etc.

You could do a 375 Whelen, but what I would really suggest since two are still setup for 7x57 is a 224 clark. It will make your 22-250 look like a kids gun. It is the 7x57 or 257 necked down to 224. Do a 1 in 7" twist on it and shoot the 80-85 grain bullets. You could also put together a very very nice 7x57 with an octagon barrel from Mark Stratton (he uses Shilen primarily and keeps good stock on hand). a 404 Jeff would be cool too.

I see now that you have a 375 already. So you could go bigger than 416 taylor, but why? You don't have a 308 Norma, and really the 358 and 308 are supposed to be owned in pairs. So unless you want to give me your 358 you might want to build it's little brother. You don' have a 30-06, that is almost unamerican. In fact, no 270 winchester or 30-06, no whelen, I see a problem bud. :-)

My suggestion is that you not build anything and instead use the money you would have spent on the custom rifles for an international hunitng trip, such as:

brown bear in Russia
elk and ibex in Mongolia
cape buffalo in zimbabwe
dove hunting in Argentina
whitetails in Alberta or Sasketchwean
