Have any of you used this outfit to provide walnut blanks for projects. He is extremely responsive and have a ton of blanks to offer. Most of them are what they call Western Black Walnut, not Claro. This is the Eastern Black Walnut grown in Oregon and Washington. It is supposed to produce a rich tough blank of wood.

Tell me what you all know!

He has very little dry wood. As he sells wood wet, I haven't seen any exhibition quality left that is dry. His prices are about double the Northern Californian dealers.

Wineland is another good source. I have seen his wood in Reno before but it was at SCI and he had the prices up for the big spenders. He did have excellent wood. As I told you, check with Preslik and see what he has. Dressels often has good black walnut too and you can deal with them. Tell Sharon I told her to give you a break. Then duck, lol. Or I will. I just looked at their site and they have a 25% sale on California English with some real nice looking wood. I know their stuff is dry. And with the 25% off, the price is right.

I sent out a few e-mails from your suggestions. I will wait and see what comes in. The Dressel's page has amazing woods!

I heard that they stopped making custom guns?

I have a English blank I bought from Doyle Wright, it had sap running out of it when I bough it Smiler. It may be dry by now, but its not a very good blank, I should have sent it back, but it was cheap. I though he was retireing.

Saying it "backfired" doesnt sound good. Could you be more specific. Sometimes we get loos lipped here and reputations get tarnish on accident?

I've bought two pieces from Doyle in the past and am quite happy with them. If the wood was wet it didn't fetch as much which was OK with me. Both blanks I picked up wereAm Black walnut but that is what I wanted. He occasionally drives through the Boise area with a pickup truck full of blanks to pick over which was a great way for me to look over what he had on hand.
Here's one for my .404 Jeffery project:
.404 J Am Black blank
Here's another that went into a friends M71 50-1-450 conversion:

I've gotten good english from Cecil Fredi (Vegas?). You can surf him up on the web. Send him an email with what you are looking for and what you want to spend.

Lived in Doyle's neck of the woods for many years and visited his sawmill and also viewed his stuff at many shows. You better know your wood and buy with him directly in front of you with one hand on your wallet and other on a moisture meter. On occasion he has had some nice stuff but not often and his prices are too high for what he has. Driving around Oregon/Washington/Idaho with gun stocks on day and firewood the next it not my idea of good business man.

Dressel's here in Yakima, WA has some mightly fine blanks and you get what you pay for. Don't be shy about calling them with you needs but be prepared to pay a premium price but for very nice wood.
