Walt: Older Ruger rifles (with the "boat paddle stock") could not be shortened by much. I assume your .300 has one of the new stocks, so you may want to ask Ruger what you can do. My M77 MK-II has a long length of pull, but I was glad I didn't shorten the stock in any way, because the scope can hit you on the eyebrow when the rifle recoils. Mine is a .338WM. You may want to mount the scope and shoot the rifle a few times, then decide what to do. Also, you may want to try a scope that has long eye relief. Mine has a Leupold Vary-X III.
