I have here a type II BAR with a 300 Win Mag barrel and a 7mm Mag gas regulator.

The buffer looks beat up.

It will cycle with wimpy loads, e.g. 40 gr H322, 220 gr. - 29,000 psi, 2050 fps.

It ejects hard with hot loads, e.g. 75 gr Re22, 220 gr - 64,000 psi, 2850 fps.

Should I get the 300WM regulator?
Can I ream out the 7mmMag regulator?

Anyone know anything?
TIA

The BAR II has a screw on the side of the gas port that it's locked with some red paint. If you need to slow down the bolt movement, then you can slightly tighten that screw. I don't understand what you mean with "regulator" but it's certainly my fault. If I recall correctly, the BAR should eject the brass about 1 meter far with regular loads.

P.S. Isn't it an "old" BAR? That could makes sense about the "regulator". You could try to ream VERY slightly the hole on the regulator, to waste a little more gas and slow down the bolt movement. The violent ejection, especially with mag cartridges, is likely due to the weakening of the recoil springs; I suppose that the better cure could be to replace the springs, but I don't know if they are easily available, and mine is only a guess. I've heard that this kind of issue is not uncommon with old BAR's.

Thanks for the response.

It was made in 1980 per this chart:
http://www.browning.com/services/dategun/detail.asp?id=18

The gas regulator marked 7mmMag will pass a .066" pin gauge, but not a .067".
