What do you say when a guy comes in and says " This was my grandfathers gun and he always took good care of it. He dropped it out of the boat a few times at the dock but he always wiped it right off. It was starting to look a little bad so I painted it black. I want to get it rust blued and how do I get the black paint off the stock now." I said well you are half way their you already have the rust. The good news is we can save the follower and spring, bolt stop and trigger. Sexy! And a single square bridge at that. Was most of the rust hidden beneath the stock? I would be quite tempted to clean it well, rust blue, apply sealant to the parts under the stock, and keep using it. Ron, speaking of square bridges, check your PM's. Todd

Todd, It was pitted all over. But really bad on the bottom. The WFM Oberndorf on the front ring was about half worn off. I dont know if it was from the rust or from being carried for almost 100 years. Oddly it didn't have the WFM legend on the left reciever wall. The stock other than having the finish completely gone wasnt that bad. Someone cut about 3/4 of an inch off then put some kind of wood on to bring it back. It does have a fresh black paint job all around where the metal was, from when he painted the metal. I dont know where he found the classic Mauser black paint, maybe wall-mart.
