howdy folks. because i don't know where this will get more attention, i'm posting it in gunsmithing and the gun collecting forums.
my father has recenting passed down to me a remington model 30 in 30-06. after quite a bit of reading online about this rifle, i'm still unclear about a few things. so i'd like to describe it for you guys and see what you can tell me about it

serial number is 8XXX
22 inch barrel in 30-06
back sight dovetailed into barrel band.
front swivel stud NOT attached to back sight barrel band
stock is checkered at grip and forearm..no finger grooves
schnabel(sp??) fore end tip
front sight pinned to front sight barrel band(front sight band also pinned to barrel)
it is D&Ted for a receiver sight
also D&Ted for scope base(2 holes in front ring and 1 in rear) nicely done
also D&Ted on left side of action for some sort of side mount. nicely done
don't know about buttplate as it's been replaced with a recoil pad
no date code on barrel forward of left side of action. instead it says "30 springfield"
"1906"
on left forward of action it says "model 30"
"express"
"8XXX"

my questions:

when was it made?
exactly which model 30 is it? 30A, 30S, ???
i figure the D&T for the receiver sight is probably from the factory but what about the D&T for the scope base and side mount? factory or not? it came with a one piece redfield base but the base looks a lot newer than the rifle.
can the rear sight(and barrel band) be removed easily and which receiver sight is period correct?

if any more info is needed to figure out what i have, please let me know.

i don't plan to alter it in any way. i plan to get some screws to fill the holes where the scope mount screwed on and hunt with it useing the open sights. until my eyes go completely bad, then i may put the scope mount back on and use a scope.

thanks for any info/input/ comments.

Sounds like a Express model 30A D/T of the receiver was most likely not factory. and it was made some where between 1926 and 1941 Being that serial number where from 00001 to 30560 Id say you have a fairly early one.
The rear sight can be removed but the barrel band is most likely soldered in place.

Don't know the exact year, but your was
built in the late 1920's. Receiver sight holes
are factory, scope mount and side mount holes
are not factory. Serial numbers run much higher
30,560. Mine has 32,xxx ser.no.
If you google 'remington serial number' you
will find a bunch of sites to help you locate
the year made.

Don't be so quick to believe the scope mount holes weren't factory. Philip Sharpe's THE RIFLE IN AMERICA states the M30 was available from the factory with a scope option, Weaver mounts and a Weaver scope. I have a M30SL Express that that came with the Lyman 48 but no rear barrel sight (the same setup with a Redfield receiver sight was known as the SR). The SX came D&T'd for a receiver sight but had none installed at the factory, only the rear barrel sight like yours.

My gun is a .35 Remington, when I got it it had been D&T'd for a scope just like yours, 2 front, one rear. The holes were plugged and there was no evidence of a scope ever having been mounted. I find it hard to believe someone bought the gun new, paid a gunsmith to D&T it for a scope and then never mounted one. I have heard of several others with the same arrangement for scope mounting.

This is my gun with a Beuhler mount and an old Kahles 4X, gun is #10140.

Your gun is earlier, is it COC or COO?

thanks to everyone for the input.
RR...first of all, very nice looking rifle. i wish the stock on mine was as nice.
what do you mean by "COC or COO"? is it the date code that's suppose to be on the left side of the barrel? my rifle doesn't have a date code anywhere that i can find.
thanks again to all. if anyone has ANY more info please post.

COC = cock on closing

COO = cock on opening

The code is not always on left side. Should be 2 letters.
