I have an old style Ruger synthetic stock, the version with the Ruger logo and name on both sides of the butt; what model/series/years of 77 fits in this stock? I have an urge to make a scout, this will be rather like building a house around an old doorknob, but stranger things have been done. thx

If you are going to buy a rifle to fit this stock. I find a old mil surplus bubba sporter buy a ashly forward base for it and go that way. I did two mil surplus bubba sporters that way and they turned out well as scout rifles.

I would find a Ruger 77 MII and put it in the stock and then do what you want to it above the barrel. I have a Ruger '06 so stocked and it has never moved Zero in any weather and any treatment since 1992. Or if that stock you have is a Short Action stock, sell it to me and start with another kind of doorknob! dmw "The liberty enjoyed by the people of these states of worshiping Almighty God agreeably to their conscience, is not only among the choicest of their blessings, but also of their rights." ~George Washington - 1789

are there two Ruger action sizes short/long? I was hoping to end up with a .308; how can I tell what length action the stock takes, if there is such a difference? thx. -------------------------------

After digging around a bit, I find the short and long action dimensions- Ruger M77 MkII SA- 7-3/16" LA- 7-7/8" After downloading an M77 manual and deducing by comparing the photos against the stock inletting it appears I have 7-3/16's between points I'm assuming the receiver would be measured from while in the stock. FWIW, the stock also has a large "413" cast in the bottom/rear of the forend channel. -so I'll assume I have a stock inletted for a MkII SA, and as Jeff Cooper specified, it will be in .308. When I locate a donor I'd like to have a charger slot milled in the rear bridge- is this possible with the integral scope base? thx.
