I picked this beauty up about a month ago.

This is a Customized Mauser 98 that was first done in Germany by F. Shafhausen in Hildesheim. The rifle features and octagon to round profile barrel with an integral rib running the full length of the barrel to include the front sight ramp. The action features border engraving as does the floor plate and trigger guard. The barrel shank has some engraving and the top of the rib in “engraved†along its entire length except for where the gunsmith placed his name and town. The front sling swivel is soldered to the barrel and the front sight is inset into the ramp and held in by a set screw. The action is setup for Claw Mounts and it came with two sets of rings fit to the mounts. The grip cap and butt plate are African Buffalo Horn. Maurice Ottmar redid the stock, fit the horn, fit both sets of rings, and modified the floor plate to fit in with the rest of the design of the gun. The rifle is chambered in 7X57 and seems to like 140 grain Nosler Partitions real well. The rifle has already accompanied my on a recent trip to South TX for wild Hog.

Very nice. Are you able to remove the scope from the claw mounts with the objective that close to the barrel?

Tom,

It looks great, the barrel alone is a real gem. Glad you got it.

Thanks guys ... as I like to say I have a very understanding wife.

As to the scope question ... No I can not take advantage of the tip off feature of these bases with the current scope. It was what I had sitting empty at the moment. I have two sets of rings for this rifle. One is a low set and the other is a high set. This scope will clear the barrel in the low rings but then the occular bell prevents bolt operation. I could mount one of the compact 3-9 power or 2-8 power scopes with a 32mm or 33mm objective and make use of the tip off feature with the high rings and then mount a 4X straight tube in the low rings. The previous owner told me that was how he hunted it so I expect it will work.

I have not weighed the rifle but I expect that it will tip the scales as she now sits somewhere around the 7.5 pound mark. She is fairly light but not overly so.

Thanks. So far I have found this rifle to shoot very well, balance and carry nice, and have very low perceived recoil. Simply a joy to shoot.

Here is a picture of it with the two hogs it took in South, TX. Both hogs just fell over, neither one took another step. I used Federal Premium ammo loaded with 140 grain Nosler Partitians.
