installing a take-off barrel

I've got a .300 Wby Sako 75 and I'm thinking about buying an unfired take-off barrel chambered in .300 RUM and having it installed on this rifle. The take-off barrel was on a Sako 75 also.

I've never had this done before, so I just want to ask the pros here if there are any reasons why I shouldn't do this. Let's don't get into the fact that I don't need a RUM, I know I don't. I don't even need what I already have. But before I'm too old to handle a RUM, I want to own one and shoot it a few years. Then I'll settle down to something more reasonable.

From a technical standpoint what are the issues I need to be aware of?

My question is where can you get a good take-off barrel for a Sako? I've been considering re-barreling my Sako for a while.

The only thing I can think of that might give you a problem is the feed rails and the mag box.
As far as the magizine goes you should be able to get a replacement for the Sako 75.
As for the feed rails, any good gunsmith should be able to rework those as well.
It is also possible for the thing to feed just fine as is. I would try to shove a few round of 300 rum in and try it. Of course thy won't go in the chamber but it my give you a idea.
Hope that helps
Shawn

Bluetick speaks with reason.

The Sako is one of the few actions/magazines which MIGHT actually hold 3 RUM cartridges without being too tight. As Bluetick suggests, get some RUM shells and try running them through your magazine. If they work, then you haven't devalued your Sako that much with the conversion. If they don't work, forget it. The difference in the two cartridges is not worth forever ruining a Sako by butchering its feed rails and whatever else you might do in attempting to make the fatter cartridge feed.
