I love 45/70's
I woulld like to build up a BA 45/70
As the M44 or M91/30 can be had for $75. I would think that the starting point for a rifle.

I looked up the specs and feel that it should feed thru the mag with a little work ?

Has anyone tryed this conversion ?
If so who did your work ?
How dose it work ?
Any ideas ?

Thanks Johnch

I converted a 91/30 to 45/70.
Today I am converting one to 30-30.

The threading and chambering is like a Mauser.
The extractor relief cut on the breech face is different.
Opening the bolt face for the larger may be different for you.

I shoot mine single shot. I used a Shilen barrel blank.

Here are some pictures:

I made a scope mount/ring welding fixture to put a FAC AK47 cast steel mount [cut down to 1/3 it's size] on a 91/30 reciever.

Take a look at the Gibbs Rifle Co. (US). They made up some 45-70s on SMLE. I think their web site still shows these rifles, but I do not think that they are still avalible. But it might give you some other ideas. Or there is the Simeese mauser if you canstill find one.

The M-N is as strong as a Mauser.The 7.62
Russian loading puts as much thrust on bolt
as a 30-06, and none ever let go.I think the older hex actions look great, and would make good 45-70, 45-90,etc. Ed.

The way I have overloaded 91/30s is to increase the powder until the bolt jams.
It is a good sturdy action for rimmed cases, but they are so ugly, I don't think this forum will become a hot bed of sporterizations and engravings.

Clark, will the .45/70 work through the M/N magazine box??

I have not tried it.
I shot the rifle once as a single shot.
My sense is that one could bend the mag walls out and get a two shot without much trouble.
It is a single stack.
The Finns put a dimple in the mag wall to get better feeding with the CORRECT ammo.

OK,
I converted a 91/30 to 30-30 and it does not feed worth a toot.

This is going to take work.

Well there is at least one Moisin Nagant that was stocked by the famous Alvin Linden for an article in the American Rifleman in the 1930s. He almost managed to make a good looking rifle out of it.

I do not think Nagants are worth spending time on. They are so ugly and awkward that I personally would not use one. To me it is like sporterizing a Carcano or an Ariska. Others may differ on that, and I respect that opinion.

I would use a Siamese, P-14 Enfield or British Enfield variation. I have a nice rifle I did on a P-14. It feeds great. I have a couple more actions ready to go. It is no problem making them feed. The P-14 box is already set up for rimmed cartridges. The width seems a little narrow but, it does work fine. I have not had luck with making boxes that are the proper width. I would suggest getting rid of the trigger guard frame that surrounds the magazine box. Set it up like a Model 70, it will be much less boxie. You will need to modify the rails and open the boltface. All the rest is cosmetic. You can make it into a nice looking rifle if you spend the time. Look for a P-14 drill rifle as you action doner.
