Assuming your action has adequate length for a 3.6 inch cartridge, the biggest challenge would be to get more than two of the fat ultramags into the magazine, and to widen the feed rails the proper amount to allow them to feed smoothly and consistently.

Dan, it is a Steyr Pro Hunter series.

Stonecreek, It only holds three of the belted magnums now.It uses a removable magazine, but there is an optional large capacity magazine which would hold 6 of the 7mm RM.
Thanks, Russ

How long is your barrel? For the 7Ultra I would want a barrel of at least 26", a longer tube would be even better. If you got a 24" tube I would scrap the idea. Better to rebarrel in that case. sure-shot

That big Ultra case holds alot of powder, if your barrel was 24" you would not gain the full potential velocity-wise out of it. In my opinion the 7ultra screams for a long tube at least 26"+ to burn it's large powder charge. So if you had a 24" 7RemMag barrel I would say leave it be or rebarrel in the 7ultra with a 26"+. sure-shot

I believe your major problems with this will be feeding. You will have to take measurements of the magazine, and if it is long enough (3.65" minimum) try putting a couple of RUM cases in and see how they fit. Does Steyr chamber anything for the RUM line? If they do, you may be able to just get the right mag from them. That will help a lot. I'm also not sure about how the Steyr barrels are fitted. I have read that a barrel removal on a Steyr is a back to the factory job. You can rechamber without removing the barrel, but it is much more difficult. - Dan

Thanks for all of the good input.

Dan, I'll check on the items you mentioned. Thanks. Just noticed your address. We had a great goose/duck trip a few years ago in your part of the world. Flew into Edmonton, van ride for 2 hrs east and a little north. I think we were an hour or so from Saskatchewan.Due to airline probs we did not arrive in camp until 3 AM, changed clothes, got licenses and headed out. Had a marvelous morning with the greater Canadas. Thanks for the input, Russ
