I just got my 300 WBY back from Tip Burn's shop treated with his QPQ finish. I think this is a form of Melonite.

Beautiful work; thanks Tip. The finish is flat black and tough as nails. I think I'm going to do some more of this one.

Melonite is as hard as a woodpecker's beak. The barrel won't scratch, but the black can wear off.

I was at Tip's place several weeks ago and he gave me a QPQ'd barrel and a file and said"Try to scratch it". The file just slid across the finish. I'll say "TOUGH"!

According to Burlington, the Melonite people, it is done at 1075F degrees. That is pretty scarey to me.
