<Frank>The M1999 Long Action in Left Hand
Rod,
Was wondering if you will be making a short action to the 243 WSSM in left hand. If/or when you do I would like to get on that list for one in left hand and one in right hand. Do you have any Idea when you might make them? Rumor has it that you might make these super short actions.

<Rod@MRC>Frank: The new WSSM cartridges should (being Jeffrey-based -- or is it rimless .348?) work in the WSM configured BCRM or BSLM. B= action length (SA) C or S is alloy, L & R are obvious. However, we won't be making a special magazine box for the WSSM right away.

Just saw your site and read a post by JBelk that reviewed your action...will be giving your man a call on Monday.

<Rod@MRC>Dropped down to Dennis Olson's on Friday and did not get back in time to update the list. Will get to it on Monday.

HenryC470I know I'm on your list for a couple of these LH long actions, but I haven't got a postcard yet.
Have the postcards gone out? I'm just a little worried my actions might have got lost in a shuffle or something.

<Rod@MRC>HenryC470: The postcards were sent to prospective customers, not to folks already on the list. The purpose is announce the program.

<Rod@MRC>The LA LH list is updated. Only 30 units to go. If we don't get them next week, we'll surely fill this out during the ShotShow (Orlando). If you're in the vicinity, call and ask Dan for a VIP badge. Get's you in the door for $15 instead of $50.

<Rod@MRC>The LH Long Action charter list is updated - 73/100.
New orders have slowed, but I believe we'll get the remaining 27 needed to start at the Shot Show next week.

CKRod,
It was nice talking with you folks - I'm looking forward to my 1999 LH long action. I'm # 131 - I'll most likely have you folks put a barrel on it too.
I haven't made up my mind on the cartridge yet....need to think and research what will fit will bill......maybe a big bore
Thank you,
P.S. The fish & fur are waiting

I have a question about the serial numbers for your actions. You list a prefix (BO3-xxxx) for the short actions, but I don't see a prefix, just the 4 digit number in your post for the long left actions. Do your long right actions have a prefix? What is your system? Sorry if you have previously explained this but I can't seem to find it.
Seems like a great decision on the hole spacing. Good process and great result. Thanks for taking the imput.

<Clint>Rod,
I may need to add another LH long action, who do I call at this late date?
By the way, it was nice finally seeing the prototype in the WHITE at Jim Brockman's booth at SCI Reno last week.
While you're working the Shot show, I'll be working a Chapter fund raiser for SCI. Wish us both luck.
Clint
Cheers to the AR crowd I met in Reno. See y'all next year!
08 February 2003, 20:46
<Rod@MRC>Clint: The date is not late. Call on Monday or Tues. morn. Dan at 406-755-4867. If you miss him before he leaves for the Shot, not to worry. This will continue to run after we get started and on up until we hit a maximum of 350 units.

HenryC470I saw your ad in Shotgun News, February 7, 203, p. 124. I guess it won't be long now.

I sent you an e-mail. Can I still get an action?
[ 02-08-2003, 19:45: Message edited by: Iron Buck ]10 February 2003, 09:28
<Rod@MRC>Iron Buck: Getting an action on the list is NOT a problem. We're close to 80 on the 100 needed to get started, but we hadn't planned to close this one out until we hit 350 units.
10 February 2003, 09:39
Iron BuckThanks Rod. I sent you another e-mail with a few questions. I may be interested in (2) actions. One for a 416 Rem Mag and the other for a 35 whelen.

CKRod,
Question: Am I correct to assume that a post 64' Winchester stock will the Model 1999 Action? I plan to get a McMllian from the factory in LH.
Thanks

WILL ANY OF THESE ACTIONS (RH) BE MADE IN SINGLE SHOT?.ALSO I SAW THAT SOME OF YOUR BARRELS WERE CHAMBERED IN 338 LAPUA? WON'T YOU HAVE TO OPEN THE BOLT FACE UP ON THEM TO .588 OR SOMETHING LIKE FOR IT TO WORK?
VERY INTERESTED IN THIS! HAVE WAITED LONG ENOUGH FOR A SINGLE SHOT ACTION IN THIS CALIBER.
THANKS
MUSKRAT

<Rod@MRC>Don't jump too soon on the stocks for LH guys. McMillan has committed to make some for the M1999 both right and left. Save yourself some work. After all we have a few months yet before those Lefties show up.
24 February 2003, 06:13
sambubbaWhat time frame for first shipment of ready actions does it look like for the LH long 1999?
24 February 2003, 18:18
<Rod@MRC>N4652E: Sorry, I missed your question the last time through. B03 = Action type and year of manufacture. B = Short Action. So the Long Actions are C03. PH will be D03 or maybe D04. WSSM could be E03. Mini will certainly be A04. So every year we get to issue serial # 1001 all over again.
Muskrat: One of the things we brought back from the Shot was a white paper for a single shot. Not too hard really. Make a plug for the mag well that offers a channel for the bolt to push feed the round into the chamber. Extractor snaps over as usual. Fire and eject as normal. Do away with the follower, spring, and bottom metal.
Sambubba: Castings could flow from Ruger into our pipeline as early as July 1st. (17 weeks from today). Set-up and machining the first week's production would take us to July 15th. Heat treat and ship (ground) to the polisher. Ship (ground) to us. July 30th in house. Ten days to inspect, engrave, buff, assemble, proof and ship...a bit longer if we're doing a barrel installation. Sounds like mid August before the brown truck pulls up in front of your door.
25 February 2003, 06:39
<chuk>Rod, the mid August date for shipping, is this the same for the right handed short action? The reason that I ask is that my lefty's are supposed to come to Canada with some SA right handed actions on the same export permit.
chuck
25 February 2003, 07:09
<Rod@MRC>chuk: I think the LH Long will flow through mold development with minimal problems. It is a mirror of the RH, and we understand the shrink issues. This is less true of the SA, but most of the issues in LA RH development were in concentricity around the cast bolt bore and in cross section, the SA is no different. If we launch them together, there's a good chance Long LH and the Shorts will stay in sync.
25 February 2003, 10:53
<chuk>Thanks Rod.

<Rod@MRC>Long Action LH is not quite there yet. The number below is paid up orders. We have 5 or 6 where the check is in the mail, but they don't go on the list until we receive it.

HenryC470Rod, on your web site, there is a picture of two M1999 actions in front of a cool poster:

HenryC470I had been thinking of using one of my M1999 actions to build a 460 G&A caliber rifle. Now, I've got a buddy trying to talk me into a 458 Lott instead, and I find that the M70 has been judged a little small for a 460 G&A cartridge.
Jack Lott said, "The [460 G&A] cartridge is suitable for the Enfield '17, Pattern '14 or 30 Remington as well as Mauser Magnum actions, the Brevex actions or Weatherby Mark Vs... It is too long a cartridge for the Model 70 Winchester or an altered '98 Mauser."*
The length of the 460 G&A case is 2.860". I don't know what that translates to in O.A.L., because I don't have 500 grain 45 caliber cannelured bullets around to measure.
Will the M1999 handle cartridges larger than will a M70 or 98 Mauser?
Thanks,
H. C.
*Gun&Ammo magazine, November 2001, pp. 68-82. Thanks, Mehul Kamdar for the scanned copy.
To answer my own question: a 500 grain bullet tends to be 0.8"-1.0" long in front of the crimping cannelure. That gives a 460 G&A cartridge an O.A.L. of 3.660"-3.860". This will not fit in the magazine you desribed in a previous post:
"The internal magazine length of the Long Action is 3.650 which would limit cartridge length to about 3.620."

<Rod@MRC>HenryC470: I regen'd the bitmap file from which the poster was made. Email a snailmail address to me (rod@montanarifleman.com) and I'll burn a CD and send it back. You'll have to find a BIG print shop to make the poster.
An enterprising gunsmith I know rolled a M1999 over on it's back and peeked into the magazine cavity. "Hey," he said, "there's room to be had here." meaning at the rear of the magazine well. You'd have to make a new box.
