douglas #4 for 358 norma mag
Just ordered a Douglas #4 barrel for my 358 Norma mag, the question I have is this going to be to light for this caliber? I am going to have the barrel cut at 25inc. I am building this rifle for elk & moose hunting, but not trying to put together a light weight, just a good hunting rifle.

I used a #4 on my 458 Dakota at 22, I think you're safe.

Personally, I think a #3 would be best. But if you aren't going to haul that rifle up and down mountains, etc. then #4 should be fine.

I had a 7mm Mag with a #5 barrel that I had turned to a #2.

I'm doing a #3 on a 35 Whelen (wish I would have done a #2). I keep getting tempted to turn this into a 358 Norma - great round for Alaska and large African plainsgame.

I did a #2 on a 8x57 Mannlicher.

I thought my Sendero was to cubersome (26" bull barrel plus a brake, so 28") and thought my Ruger RSM 375 H&H was to heavy - got a Mauser M03 Extreme with a 300 Weatherby and 375 H&H barrel in the standard (non-African) profile. Just about the right weight now for these two calibers.

My .358 Norma was a factory Husqvarna with the equivalent of a #3 contour, and it was a joy to carry and shoot. I have a hankering to build one on a Springfield action and if I do so will go with the #3 barrel at 25 inches. The #4 is too heavy for me.

Was that a Douglas #4 or another barrel maker, I see that some are heavier than others?

Thanks for the info gigs

Heck I use a Douglas 4 on 411s. I use a #3 on 375s. A #3 would be great for the 358 but I sue don't think you need 25"s of it. I have a 20" 358N and it sends 250 factory down range at around 2750.

As usual just my $.02

Your write I probably don't need a 25inc barrel, but I like a long barrel on my hunting rifles.

A long #3 will likely weigh about the same as a shorter #4.

I actually built a 358 win with a 21" #2, as well. Very light. Less than 7.5 with scope, sling, and 4 rounds. Love it
